Key cloning / programming

Hi all, new to this forum so sorry if this has already been posted somewhere else.

I Recently bought a 2nd hand Fiat Grande Punto as as the prev owner had lost the remote key all I have is the 2nd none remote key.

I'm sure I read some where that with Fiat's the keys cant be cloned as over time one key would stop working but I since cant find the post saying that, I asked them in Thimpsons & was told they can be cloned no problem.

Anyone know if this is the case as I could do with a spare key just in case

Re: Key cloning / programming

I had a non-remote key cloned from a remote key, and it works fine years later. When I was looking, you could only get remote keys from a dealer but that might have changed now.
@ponsaloti may be able to advise further

Re: Key cloning / programming

If you have only non-remote key, now depends on what you want:
1, to make only copy of this key (HW part + IMO inside) - in this case there's no problem to do it by any car-key-company
2, you want completely new key (HW part + IMO inside + remote) - then you need to contact FIAT dealership and they'll manufacture concrete key for you (based on VIN number)

Re: Key cloning / programming

Thanks for the replies.

Not sure if it makes a difference but its an 08 plate.

I was just thinking of getting my current none-remote key cloned just to keep it as an emergency backup as dont like the idea of paying a Fiat dealership 400 for the remote.

Never did find thoses links saying a fiat grande key cant be cloned but remember it was something to do with the level of coding or something if it helps (my none-remote key has no blue marking on it)

I think the way it works is you can have 10 active keys. Keys are not cloned but you get the next available number. Presumably it is also true you can disable a lost key. Presumably once you have used up all of the 10 possible keys then you are forced to disable all keys including the ones you possess physically and then reenable the available physical keys beginning again at key 1.

OK I can see I was wrong. There is no way for the car to tell the difference between two cloned keys.

I agree it is a clone. The car cannot tell the difference. the keys are the same both can be inserted. both work

Earlier I was thinking it is not cloning

Re: Key cloning / programming

Again thanks for the replies.

After a chat with someone at work I think before I had posted the thread I had been confusing a couple of things, so if I'm right I'm now thinking its a case of;

-The only time you need to get a key programmed to the car is when its a remote key you want to use to remotely unlock your car

-Any none-remote keys you want to start your car can be cloned as the immobilizer would seen them both as the same key anyway

Think I will just nip to Timpsons & get my key cloned, for the sake of 55 its worth the piece of mind.
