1.4 Gearbox Ask

Just towed my friends car home. She was reversing when ,without warning she felt something go 'ping?' and hey presto no gears.
No side to side movement in the gear lever,no friction going from first to second...and its stuck in reverse gear.
Clutch res is full,no leaks anywhere and the clutch pedal feels normal.
Slave cylinder is dry too..not a lot of movement in the arm tho..but then again I dont know how much there should be.

I took the gear lever cover off, tried to engage reverse and theres nothing connecting the bush that slides up the pillar of the lever. Some plastic bit did fall out.

Any one got any ideas?..please..

Sounds like a cable has snapped or come disconnect. Check under the bonnet for movement when moving the gear lever. The cable at the back needs to be in the middle position to get neutral, you can do this by hand,so you can move the car(by pushing it)?

Re: 1.4 Gearbox Ask

Thanks for the reply Pete. It was indeed a snapped cable.
46 for a genuine cable, which was 20 cheaper than an aftermarket one.
And it would rain the day Im on my back under a car wouldnt it...

It will probably indeed ...

Do you remember there is a 'zeroing' procedure to adjust the cables ? I don't think it's on all kinds of GB but maybe yours has it ...

Cheers, Bernie

Re: 1.4 Gearbox Ask

I looked at the polish video referenced in here..BUT it was the other cable that I replaced.
Is there a 'zeroing' process for this one too?...

Re: 1.4 Gearbox Ask

On the basis of one cable has already snapped so the other one could to,and being a 'prevention is better than cure' kinda man I replaced the second cable too.
Following the video I adjusted the new cable and am pleased to say .....
Its like driving a new car..smooth gearbox !!!

Thanks again to this forum. Without it and all the valuble contributions we all make I would have been lost and my friend considerably more outta pocket.
