Hey guys,

sorry if posting wrong, i am quite new to this and to doing my own car.

My issue is, under my car i have noticed some slight oil residue and also some gunk around the circle things under car? (not even sure what the part is....ill attach pictures)

My car is a 59 plate with LOW mileage of 10,000, but it is looked after. I check my oil level and it is not low, coolant is fine, all fluids are fine, but yet i am seeing bits of oil residue, that look fairly fresh (in pics) and some looks like black soot marks, is the soot marks normal or is that oil that's just been on my car for ages but still means a leak?

I just want to know if anyone can shed some light on what i am looking at. Any help would be great as i dont no whether to be worried or not

Pics are of my engine bay and then 3 pictures of what i noticed underneath.

Hi [Last_Name],

we can hardly see what you're talking about cause the back-light on the picture, next time close the bonnet and force the flash !
It seems that the "circle thing" is the crankcase sensor; should NOT be oily but might have spilled when performing oil replacement... If you want to be sure, clean all you can and watch frequently for any NEW oil spilling...

BTW, nice shot of the sonic wheel ;-)

Regards, Bernie

As long as you keep an eye on the oil level you will be fine.
The pictures you took are from under the oil filter, usually when the oil filter is replaced, some oil usually drips there. In time it spreads and looks much worse that the 2 tea spoons of oil that are actually there.

Mine looked like a biological disaster a few weeks ago when i replaced the oil and filter. Half a can of brake cleaner and some paper towels fixed that.

thanks for that i will keep an eye out for any major leaks and just give it a clean up and watch cautiously.

Hi [still_don't_know_first_name],

the sonic wheel is there to tell the Engine Control Unit (ECU) in which angular position the engine is (did you noticed the "missing" teeth, why I said it was a nice picture ?) This in conjunction with the camshaft (and many more) sensor will allow the ECU to compute the best injection timing/duration...

Whoa...missing teeth??? sorry if being dumb but i have just started learning about cars. Are you saying their is something wrong with my sonic wheel / car (which i am assuming is the part with belt attached to it on left side of pic)

My name is Emmerson btw lol.

thanks again

Hi Emmerson,

the teeth are volontary missing to alter the signal sent by the sensor to the Engine Control Unit when this "missing theet" area passes in front of it, which correspond to a specific position of the engine.

So no worries, your pulley looks perfectly normal ;-)

Regards, Bernie
