I bought a car that was pulling to the left (good price dw) and its pulling to the left also the steering is very very very light but sometimes goes normal again (normal steering weight) and the city steering button does nothing. Im gussing to fix the light steering would be a new power steering pump maybe? But also the car is pulling to the left quite badly, anyone else had this or think theyre related problems?

EDIT!: ive noticed the steering only goes light when i turn the wheel left (left is also the way it pulls) but when i turn it right its normal weight?

Its the Electric Power Steering unit. My symptoms were EXACTLY the same!! See my post towards the bottom for a link to the AWESOME company I got my part from. I'm not a car nut and it only took me two hours to fix ;)

Perfect reply, just what I was hoping for. How much did this cost and was your car doing everything mine is? Like my steering is super light when i turn left but normal heavyness when i turn right and also when im driving and let go of the steering wheel it pulls bad to the left?

And from that post it looks like you did it your self was it hard? Also is it the steering collumn im looking at replacing or the electric power steering?

Cheers!

It was doing EXACTLY what yours was doing mate
Yep - fitted myself - the reconditioned part was £230 delivered from acspowersteering - they send you the part and a UPS label to return your old, knackered one - just call and tell them when/ where you want it collected.

The whole job took me 2 hours - its one of those things that now I've done it I could definitely do in an hour now - looks MUCH worse and drastic than it actually is :D

If you read that thread I didn't do the whole strip down as mentioned in the original big guide post - you don't have to go to all that trouble :)

The part in question is that big silver lump/ box on my picture under the steering wheel (or the space where it was) Its basically a big, posh electric motor :)

Your first job is move the driver's seat right back, get your head in the footwell and look up - you'll see a white label with barcodes on the big silvery power steering motor. (**TOP TIP - TAKE A PIC WITH YOUR PHONE - save breaking your neck/ back) :D

Then give these guys a bell: acspowersteering.co.uk

http://www.acspowersteering.co.uk/fiat-grande-punto-electric-power-steering-eps-part-no-55704060/

Give them the serial & model numbers off the sticker and they will ensure your incoming working part is calibrated and coded to your car's ECU :)

Easiest way I found - just ordered over the phone and paid with debit card.

right! cheers for this will definitely give it a try, I've done odd things like change a starter motor but once youve finished it and it works you feel like you could do it all again but 10x as confident and 10x as fast lol.

Also how long did you drive the car while it was like that?
and just to confirm this is the part(will try get one new just using the pic as reference)

Yes that's the part.

Its the wife's car - she'd (TYPICALLY) been driving it like that for about 3 BLOODY WEEKS before mentioning that "her car was pulling to the left A BIT!".....I took it out for a test drive and nearly ended up on next door's drive :D

I ordered the part that day and changed it that weekend.

Hahaha yeah mines just as bad i let go for a split second and nearly mounted the curb. Cheers for all the info anyway you don't know how helpful you've been! Will get everything sorted tomorrow and hopefully get it done by end of weekend.

Cheers again! (y)

How did you get on with it then bud? :D

It actually went really good, bit fiddly having to fit with the steering while still wired up but I got there and then was chuffed with myself and had to ruin it by leaving my petrol cap at the petrol station (wasn't there when I returned) the stupidest mistake haha

Hey guys,

On the subject of Steering and problems is like to share my problems encase someone has come across similar issues. Few months ago I lost all power steering (on a great road in North Wales, wasn't happy)

I took it to the local mechanic and was told I needed a new torque sensor, having researched a bit more I eventually bought a second hand steering column as suggested by members of the forum. The guy fitted it but a few more probables occurred, firstly I have power steering back but it's not 100% accurate, I'm driving in city mode as normal mode is fairly heavy but manageable and secondly due to the mechanics disconnecting the battery a few faults on the dash has cropped up 'ESP Disconnected' and 'ASR unavailable' with the ASR button constantly on. I've tried the right lock left left centre trick but no luck. I went to a fiat dealer and they said they will charge £85 just to use test.

Help?

Have you tried a new battery? It could just be as simple as resetting the lights with a OBD reader which can be done and they will go off and hopefully not come back on. Local garage near me reads the code and resets them for £20. If the lights came on after disconnecting the battery chances are its nothing and they just need reseting.

Had a similar problem on a VW Polo I had a year ago, got them reset, never came back.
