Hi,

I bought a 2nd hand 1.4 sporting end of July 2013, it was off road for 9 weeks starting 19th October whilst the dealer took a long time to replace the steering column. Got it back and 2 days later (20th Dec) I couldn't get reverse gear.

AA recovery suspected it was something in the gearbox. Finance company arranged independent examiner to come out and establish what the fault was and if to show if it was present at the time of purchase. He arrived 2nd Jan and said he was there just to confirm if reverse gear was working or not. He tried the gears, couldn't get reverse, looked under the bonnet pointed to the selector cables and said they probably needed replacing or adjusting and might have been damaged during the column replacement when the steering rack was dropped. Took a photo of them, some details about the car and went on his way.

Report comes back that the cables are at fault, might need adjusting, might be due to recent repair work.

Finance company says the dealer needs to respond and he agrees to let my local garage take a look to try and establish if the fault is the cables. After a quick look they say no, it looks internal and then further check by detaching the cables and manually selecting gears, all forward ones are ok but reverse is difficult.

Finance company say that as the cables aren't at fault then it must be internal, double check with examiner outfit who state it must be the synchro on reverse and is doubtful it would have been present at the time of purchase. Finance company say they'll take no further action and repair costs are now down to me.

I tell my garage to take the gearbox apart and see what's wrong, here's what they found.

I'm after opinions on:

Would this be considered reasonable for a 59 plate 1.4 Sporting with 23k on the clock?

Would this be considered reasonable wear and tear after purchase when I've had use of the car for 12 weeks and done 2800 miles?

What would you consider the likely cause of the bearing damage?

Many thanks,

Andy
