Out checking stuff and noticed a couple of 'oily bits'.

Can anyone tell me what they are and why they seem to be covered in oil?

I checked the levels absolutely bob on so bit confused.

It looks like it is just above the driveshaft (I think) this is right hand side looking down, so nearside.

First photo is looking behind the wheel, the oily bit seems to be a bit of pertruding metal. No idea.

Second one is looking down past the airbox (which is to the left)

Third one is a photo of what looks like an oily button, I thought it might be a stone or something but I tried pulling it and it seems to be connected. Won't tighten or loosen. no idea.

Final one is a bit closer looking down on to it. Very oily.

worried?

Closer inspection seems to be coming from where that black circular button is and dripping down on to the other components in the other pictures.

what the f*ck is it?

Fine, lots of Googling makes me think it is possibly a clogged filter, so instead of the breather letting out trapped gasses and air through the filter, because it is clogged, oil is coming out instead because of the back pressure.

I have cleaned around the breather to assess the rate of leakage. If it is fairly substantial I will book it in straight away, if not I will just wait until MOT time. Apparently the dust and stuff that the filter stops is actually quite harmful to the inner workings of the box so could greatly reduce it's lifetime.

Could this be a possible reason for such abhorrent reliability on the FIAT boxes?

are you sure you dont have a weep on the driveshaft oil seal.
that cv joint in pic3 does look a tad damp

I'd expect a small amount of vapour from the breather, hence a small amount of oil, then the dirt sticks to it making it look far worse.

Start with a gentle jet wash

It wasn't a small amount though fella, where the breather is situated was covered, and subsequently all the metalwork going down from there. It wasn't wet granted but enough to cause concern and it wasn't like that last time I looked last month.

As I said I've washed the top of the box so it is clean and can assess the flow. Hopefully not too bad!

hi guys I just wanned to find out what could cause the car to indicate power steering failure?

Hello,

this is typical problem for Fiat/Opel gearboxes. (Fortunately it's not functional problem)

It comes from the upper gasket.

The problem is with the gasket (Item nr 6 from here):
https://www.fiatdalys.lt/lt/katalog...0/0/0/0/transmission-case-and-covers#55240149

Fiat recently modified this gasket, and reporting by Polish car mates now it's OK.

Fiat nrs:
Old: 55240149 (color is black)
New: 55250937 (color is brown)

Need to replace the shaft also:

maybe the too much gearbox oil. Originally they like put in too much oil... well worth to open the checking hole and let to downflow the excess. That's all.

if oil is leaking out the breather ,and the oil is spot on level wise ,then you have to think what is causing the gearbox to pressurise that it would then force oil out the breather..Is the breaether partially blocked ?? Give the area a good steam clean or a clean with brake cleaner and monitor it ..A bit of dampness isn't anything to worry, about otherwise w would be constantly changing seals ..I can't remember the figure but a leak to worry about has to leave a certain sized stain under the vehicle when parked up ..So if just damp clean it up and monitor it
