Hi,

This warning message has been coming up more frequently on the computer lately. It says something like 'Insufficient oil pressure, stop car and turn off engine" - but no warning light comes up on the dashboard. I admit to ignoring it because it always happens when I'm on the motorway - and then what am I supposed to do, leave it for 30 mins and drive off again? Ring RAC?

Does anyone know what this message means (to a layman) and what the fix is?

Thanks

Hi Andy,

It was last serviced Jan/Feb 12 at 45,000 miles. Now on 65,000. I was going to hold off until 70,000 for another service because that's when the belt and pump change is due isn't it?

Oil level is fine. Could it be sensor fail related?

err thats 20,000 miles the interval is 18k

It could be that the oil has begun to break down and turning to sludge which is clogging the filter / oil gallys leading to possible oil starvation of the turbo which will not be cheap!

I would also change the water pump tensioner and belt sooner rather than later better to air on the side of caution especially since its an interference engine

And yes it could be sensor related BUT i really would start with a oil flush and oil and filter change (the correct spec of oil should be used see your handbook ) followed by a pressure test of the oil system to see whats going on...

Also if its bad enough i'd be doing another change in 500 miles time and another flush, oil and filter to ensure you get as much sludge out as you can..

You need to give a wee bit more information....

Year, mileage done in last 12 months, total mileage, any other symptoms, engine size, when was it last serviced etc. etc. It's hard enough to diagnose remotely and even harder with no useful information. Any and all information is useful.

Long time since I posted here but got an email prompt about this.

Basically my former car was serviced at the suggested long life intervals (give or take a few thousand miles :D ). The warning message came up but the dealer wasn't interested. The car then dropped all its oil and the turbo blew. The servicing team accused me of negligence (not keeping an eye on the oil levels) and it cost me a cool £1000 to replace the turbo and my then 4 year old car drove like a tractor afterwards.

My advice is take it to an independent/FIAT specialist garage who may actually check the engine bay rather than just plug in a diagnostic computer and get the oil changed every 10,000 miles regardless of what the service manual says.
