Hi,

I'm currently in the process of wiring in my new head unit, and I was following the guide here:
https://www.fiatforum.com/grande-pu...ket-hu-grande-punto-also-most-other-cars.html

However my black connector doesn't seem to have a plain red wire coming from it, so I am unsure which is the live. Here are 2 pictures of the wires I have coming from the black plug, so could someone please tell me which one I should be splicing into?

Thanks so much andy, should there definitely be a wire going in to the ignition one? (I'm guessing since the standard HU should get it's power from somewhere)

I don't want to have to be soldering wires to pins

The OEM headunit has a constant live feed which the new headunit will use.... it is turned on by a signal via the CAN network, After market units cant detect this and go via an ignition feed which switches the radio on and off with the ignition ....

with that you should be able to wire it in no problem without having to attack the standard loom / plug making refitting the original unit when you sell much easier (y)

So with that I plug the existing connector into the big black bit, and the other 2 plugs coming off it just plug into the back of the new headunit?

So I'm guessing I use a scotch lock on the wire of this new lead, so the original wiring loom remains untouched?

Sorry for asking silly questions but I'm new to this :)

yes

but looking at that there is a length of wire to attach to it ready...

you can cut into the correct wire on the adaptor and use a small screw terminal or a through crimp

and a scotch hook onto the fag lighter red wire (i'd add a small fuse in there too as you really do not need 20a running up the back of the dash to the headunit (lots of sharp bits up there)

loads to chose from i usually use these as they are stocked locally

so in short

scotch hook a short length of wire onto the red fag lighter wire.....

put a blue insulated crimp onto the end of it

attach the fuse holder (i'd use something like a 2amp or 3amp fuse)

crimp another Crimp to the length of wire and feed it up past the gear stick and up the back of the headunit and cable tie it in place best you can to keep it away from any sharp bits

and cut into it into the red wire on the ISO adaptor and connect your cable that you have fetched up to it where it goes into the head unit

No problem (y)

when your wiring that in keep the ignition off that way you cant short out the fag lighter

Just watch your hands fiat do not seem to care about sharp bits behind the dash

i'd link to the adaptor with one of these

id order a pair of these unless you know someone who has a set makes crimping very fast easy and secure

shop about price wise

As to keeping the ignition off yeah I will, I was planning on disconnecting the battery anyway.

Trust me, I've learnt about sharp bits behind the dash before as well  I find myself feeling more and more sorry for Fiat technicians every time I do something to my car and realise how complicated/dangerous it is!

I think I may have a set of those crimping plier things, or a set I can borrow of my dad.

Crimps, Crimp Butt Connectors, so much to learn! I only found out what a scotch lock was a few days ago
