Hi All. Greetings from Australia.

Car: 2006 built Grande Punto Sporting 1.9 Multijet

Problem: Power steering failure. After searching these forums and other sites and a lot of reading and discussion, I am almost certain that I need to replace the Electronic Steering Shaft. Have been quoted a crazy price from the dealers here so need to source the part elsewhere then convince the dealer to fit it and do whatever calibration/computer work is required. (Only the dealers can access the full diagnostics I am told).

So, I have found the part here I believe (sorry for the broken link, the forum wont let me post urls yet):

h t t p:// w. w. w. shop4parts.co.uk/?name=store&op=Details&ProdID=3709&sku=9990

There are actually two parts listed, one for cars with "Dynamic Vehicle Control" and one for cars without. I assume "Dynamic Vehicle Control" is "ASR"?

Obviously I need to be as sure as possible that I order the correct part if I source it from the UK. Can anyone tell me whether the part linked above is the right one?

Thanks heaps in advance! Love the car but this sort of thing is heartbreaking. Never had a problem with the steering up until yesterday, now it's completed forked

That's a lot of money for something your not too sure about. Have you got a second and third opinion?
Electric motors can fail but much more likely is a poor connection or a broken wire etc.
If it comes to ordering a new shaft from overseas, try other countries that might be much cheaper. The UK is not the cheapest market.

the reason the dealer price is so much is because its a modified part, fiat had a problem with the torque position sensors going open circuit hence the modified part. i very much doubt the dealer will fit a part not supplied by them (i know the dealer i work for would never do that). where are you situated? im willing to look at it, get the parts required and repair the vehicle (out of work hours) for a fraction of the price

Funny you say that. Turns out that the part has been superseded 10 times or so I am told..? I have ordered a genuine part with the current part number so expect the dealer will fit and calibrate it. One dealer did say they would not fit a superseded part which i kind of understand but not really unless there was a safety recall on the superseded part which there wasn't in this case. I think the reason parts are expensive here is that there is no "official" dealer network rather an importer who is just a middle man.

Does anyone know how long it takes (workshop hours) to fit and calibrate new power steering?
