Hi guys, new to the forum... been reading for a while but thought I would post now!

My girlfriends GP has never been good on fuel, most its seen is 42mpg and thats when it was brand new.

Recently its dropped to around 37mpg :(

Drives fine, no smoke, etc...

Had a new turbo under warranty at around 29k miles.

Anything I can check / change that may cause bad MPG?

I do approx 11-12 miles each way to work in it... not exactly around town.

Even on the motorway, it doesnt change much... most EVER, driving 350miles to Longleat in 6th doing 70-80mph it was approx 42mpg.

Urban figures sound right, I have a heavy right foot and yeterday on a round trip to London managed 46mpg at err the national speed limit.

at err the national speed limit.
Hahahaha lol

tbh I hate the trip computer, Mine stays at 42 and that when I'm being good, being economic and using the m6 everyday. I do about 20 miles to uni and then back. plus about 2 miles to work and back each day. If I boot it it drops to about 36-38 and as I say if I nurse it, it only get 42-44. the only time it has ever gone higher is when i reset it after fuelling up then going straight on the motorway. usually get up to about 56 then... but this soon plumets after leaving the motorway :/

I did Newcastle and back + other driving between destinations in my Abarth at a weekend and got 37.5 mpg overall (some spirtited driving in there) and at 80mph in 6th on the Speedo (around 70mph real life given the 10%)

you should be getting more than 42, might be down to your driving style, harsh acceleration and road reading skills, and other bits. For example why accelerate to a red light or roundabout if there is no point and little things like that.

if you want higher mpg on motorway do about 60mph that should make a bit more of a difference

doing 11-12 miles is not enough to judge your car's fuel economy, I get about the same on a 9 mile trip to work, mostly motorway. Fear not, your fuel consumption sounds right, the JTDm engine -like pretty much all diesels- give good mpg on long trips, this is where you need to measure your fuel consumption.

im lucky if i get 35mpg in mine doing 12 miles to work, but with over 190bhp its fine :)

i can get 500+miles on a full tank on motorway, as i did to enfield and back, and that was going over 70mph.

Well all I know is that when I drive to and from work at a constant 65 mph I am only getting 42 mpg over a 70 mile stretch according to the computer, Still better mpg than the tangerine though! ;) was putting £60 in a week for 400 miles and only putting £35-£40 for the yellow peril including some overtaking on the b-roads! :D

Around town i only get about 40mg in the summer and 37 in the winter, i have checked this my self i dont trust the computer. If i use shell v power i get about 3mpg increase around town and on a run i get 50mpg doing 80mph if i drive sensibly then this goes to 57mpg, i never get any better than that out of it than that.

Winter draw(er)s on?

First 5ml is hardly enough to reach optimum temp. - best (where possible) to stay <40mph until up-to temp.

What else has “recently” changed?

Let’s have a look at your black-box data …

range? trip? av.mpg? av.mph? hrs?

---------------------------------
55 Prestigio 1.9/16v 150HP (42mpg)

I noticed a big drop in economy when the EGR valve was not working correctly.
I have changed this twice (cleaning sometimes works) and symtoms were there both times of around 10 mpg worse than normal - you should get mid 40's with ease 50+ on good motorway runs.

Cheers for the replys...

The car has never been good on fuel, has never seen anywhere near 50mpg even on a 350 mile trip.

I think maybe the car was just a Friday afternoon job ha ha!!!

Put a bottle of Forte Diesel treatment in it to see if it helps, will also have a look at the EGR valve if we get a nice day.

It just seems poor considering my Focus RS can manage 30mpg on a run and thats with 330+ BHP.

The BHP output of an engine is no longer a guide to fuel efficiency: 2 litre Golf 190 hp Tdi: 52 MPG, Fiat GP 1.4 8v 77hp= 41 mpg. If you are not getting near to what you think it should be, the cheap things to check are; tyre pressures up to spec at least or +10%, oil & air filter cleanliness, brakes not binding, injectors/fuel system performing, piston compression + emissions check and so on. It's annoying though, my 4x4 Panda rarely made to 37 mpg, the only reason for selling it.

Driving technique can add 3-5% better fuel economy. My wee car performs better in town than on the motorway, but still doesn't get anywhere near Fiat's claimed Urban MPG, despite being new.

You tried running ecoDrive and analysing the results/suggestions?

Ifeither of you were referring to my post then..
TallTom: yeah I know hot to drive econmically and gaining the advantages from the EGR when coasting up to lights in gear and stuff like that. When I'm trying I really am very good at reading the road... shame that i'm normally "just driving"

Colin: Yeah used the eco:Drive, found it to not be that good to be honest, did manage to get my economy when I first started using it but then it just stayed the same :/

Ive been driving for 15 years and know how to drive like a granny, my best mpg out of the car has been 48mpg but it's sitting at 42 just now and I don't race off the lines at traffic lights.

I think a tuning box/remap to get better mpg is maybe the way to go if cleaning the egr fails?
