I know what your thinking, not another egr thread! however i have some questions i would like answerd please :D

1. the egr valve, recirculates exhuast gases back into engine and is open at idle and low revs and closes at higher revs, correct?

2. To solve the problem you can get a new egr valve (on my second now) or get a modified gasket from fiat, or blank the egr valve off by means of a tin can etc?

3. Apparently you should not blank off the valve completely as it can cause excess heat on turbo and lead to failure, recommended that a 5mm hole is drilled through middle of home made gasket, any truth?

4. Finally, I understand that by blanking or egr or modified gasket will stop - prevent the gases been recirculated and therefore help car run better, however when mine failed, my car had no power at low revs and what i dont understand is that if say it was stuck open then surely it should have ran rubbish throughout rev range and if say it was stuck closed it should have ran suberb as it would have been simular to blocking - modifying gasket, anyone explain?

5. what do people recommend, buying new egr valve, modified gasket or home made?

Thanks

The opposite really- opens at idle for a while and at part throttle/cruising, closed at full throttle.

If it fails part-open you usually end up with massive lag/no power till about 2.5/3krpm when the turbo has enough left-over airflow through it to spool up. If it fails fully open you'll usually have poor idle and it won't rev as the engine is 'choked' by the exhaust gas. If it fails closed, the ECU detects it, and switches to 'limp mode' as a safety/emissions measure.

thank you for your post, that has helped my understanding further, however reading back at question 1, i really meant what you said, i must of confused my self when typing. I will change it now.

Hopefully some people will answer the remainder of my questions :D

For the effort you'd go to with the other options and the potential for it not working, I'd personally buy a new valve. You can source them quite cheaply (if you look in the right places) and then you'd have a spare on which to experiment.

I'd recommend eBay or trying your local Vauxhall dealer.
