Good Afternoon,

Well the last couple of months my cigar lighter isn't working in my GP. I checked the fuse (thanks for this site for telling me where it was! After many hours searching!) and it had gone so I brought some more. I changed the fuse over and it still doesn't work. My guess is the element is broken so I need to get a new cigar lighter. I brought one from Halfords however the connection leads are different.

I was wondering does anyone know how to fit the new cigar lighter (standard one) and take the old one out? Or if I should take it back and get one from fiat? Any ideas on the pricing?

Cheers

Lee

All I have done is disconnected the cigarette lighter and sort of ruined the one thats in there trying to pull it apart. Do you think I should call them up and see what they say?

Well I called up Fiat about 5 months ago.. and they said this wasn't covered in my years warentery I have left. They said it would be 69.99+VAT to diagnose the problem and when I enquired to see how much the cigar lighter was they said £29.99 to £35.00 I said that I would do it myself!! Rip off seriously. The last time I checked I didn't drive a bentley!

I love the car but there servicing and parts are EXPENSIVE!

Might take it to a local mechanic and see what they can do!

Its how FIAT recover the money from selling so cheap....

Guy yesterday was telling me about VW charging him £60 + VAT to check his battery (I couldn't help but laugh...could got new one for that!) and friend got charged £38 for honda inner door release handle (just the handle itself not even the surround!) and a good mate got charged £386 for audi TT first service.

There is no 'charity' in whatever business you are in or need and as in all walks of life if you 'know someone' (builder/plumber etc) then thats a advantage.

No not that I know of the Cigar Lighter is 12v thats it!

hence voltage there should be a voltage of 12 volts at the lighter...

shame your not local i'd meter it out for you..

right does it work when you push a satnav/ mobile phone/ compressor in the lighter socket (with the ignition on??)

Does it illuminate with the ignition switched on (do it in the dark)??

if no

pop the gear knob gator cover off (the plastic square trim unclips where it meets the plastic center consul)

look inside check the base of the sockets there is a 3 pin socket check its connected

hope that helps

I have checked the connecter with a tester no power going to it what so ever.. changed the fuse again double checked that was the right fuse which it is.. still not getting any luck..

There is no power what so ever going to the wires..

The strange thing is that the wire seems to be coming from the back instead of the front.. so I am just wondering whether there is a doggy connection back there...

Any one else help at all??

right then its down to a process of elimination as to the fault.

there are 3 wires going to the back of the socket...

red, Black and another (yellow )

the red is live supply

black is earth/ ground

yellow is the sidelight feed

try with the lights on that there is a power between yellow and black this should rule the Earth connection out.

you really want access to an insulating piercing tester so you can test the wire just away from the plug just in case its not been terminated correctly

other than that its a matter of following the wire looking for any damage from the fuse box to the connector (have you put the meter on at the fuse box the fuse has 2 holes in the top to enable you to put a tester on them,,,

Thanks Andy for your advice. However I looked in the fuse box in the glove compartment and one of the fuses wasn't in properly so re-connected that and switched the ignition on and its worked w00p w00p!

Your right the yellow cable is for the light.. (I think the interior we is that aswell.. that has the yellow, red and black.)

I put a cigar lighter I brought from halfords in and just bogged the wiring up but it works fine however the old cigar lighter was a B****t to get out!

Cheers! (y)
