Hi folks.

I'm having the Drivers side rear glass replaced next week as the rubber strip that runs vertically down it has split due to rubbing on the rubber seal on the top corner of the door. It was funny opening the door when the car was wet as the door rubber would flick me in the face with a nice spit of rainwater!

My question is as the glass is bonded to the bodywork would it not damage the paintwork when removing the bonding stuff and maybe cause the metal work to corrode in the future when the new pane of glass is bonded back on? Anyone know what is involved in this type of repair?

Cheers.

Fatus. :)

Be prepared for the glass removal tool, could be a large screwdriver. That is what they used on two windscreens I have had replaced. Scratched the paintwork all the way down to bare metal. Just be prepared to watch what they do. The fitter has no interest in your paintwork or the warranty. His interest is only in replacing the glass as quickly as possible. Apologies to any windscreen fitters I may have offended, just sharing my experiences.

Thats just the type of horrible thought i've been thinking about the past couple of days. Again not meaning to offend anyone in the glass replacement trade. My luck i get the guy who's having an off day and decides to get a bit rough on my GPS.:cry:

I'll pop over to the dealers tomorrow and tell them to go ahead and just replace the door rubber and realign the door and i'll live with the little split on the top of the glass seal. Better that than knowing they may possibly screwing up the paint /bodywork.

I have just had the windscreen replaced twice in my GP... the first one cracked 2 weeks after it was replaced... I should imagine from having watched him do it that the procedure is the same for the side window.

The fitter broke the seal between the screen and the body using a kind of spatula thing with a sharp edge. After removing the screen, he then removed any excess sealant with a knife to leave a very thin layer of sealant all the way round the screen. He did NOT take it down to bare metal. Next, he painted what he called a coat of primer over the old sealant. Once the primer had dried, he applied sealant all the way round over the primer and stuck the screen to it.

At no point was any bare metal exposed.

Thanks for your comments gents. Will let them carry out the work whilst i watch how he goes about carrying the job out.:D I'll be sure to keep an eye out for some dodgy looking screwdrivers....lol!

Right. Update for anyone interested.
Glass company replaced the damaged seal/side window. New glass also has seal which is too long. Dealer is happy to trim back the excess rubber so it does not catch of the top of the door again whilst i wait next week. Result.
Hats off to my local dealer for the sterling service. Considering i never bought the car from them in the first place. They've been great :)

all that worrying for nothing;)

Heehee! I do admit to feeling a bit of a tit now.

Whilst i was at the dealers. I did notice a whole GP windscreen laying against a fence missing the whole rear view mirror assembley. There were fracture marks on the glass where the mirror was. All i can think is the owner must have really been doing his best Tarzan swinging off the mirror with both arms to yank it off causing that sort of damage. :D
