Technical Turbo problem....i think

It sounds like it could be the EGR valve. I had the same problem on the wifes 1.9 Sporting. No power low down then picked up at about 2500rpm. No warning lights and no fault showing on diagnostic but turned out it was a sticking EGR valve. They did try cleaning it out as an interim measure but problem came back the next day and the valve was replaced under warranty.

I've got EXACTLY the same problem, first noticed on Monday (3 days ago)!!

My Sporting JTD is flat up to 1800 revs, between 1800-2400 revs it pulls like a small engined normally aspirated petrol, then turbo kicks in at 2500 revs and she's flying!

Booked her in for a check at Ashmoles in Swansea, will defo suggest the EGR valve. Thanks to you guys I can sleep easy at night! I initially thought it was down to rubbish Tesco diesel or even worse, that the engine was giving up the ghost!

Respect to you all!:worship:

Take sooner rather than later as its probably going to get a whole lot worse and is really dangerous in traffic or for pulling on roundabouts. Also the engine management light will kick in like mine and will just render the car useless. Let me know what Ashmoles in Swansea are like I use BV Rees in Cardigan, they are pretty good, but not convenient always as its 40 miles in the opposite direction to where i work. Ironically i work for a firm of accountants called Ashmole & Co!

Went to Ashmoles this morning and told them of the symptoms and what I thought was the fault with the vehicle. The car was ready in the afternoon, Ashmole's said they cleaned the EGR valve and put some additive in the tank. I drove off for about a mile, brimmed her with BP Ultimate, when I drove off the fuel station the engine management light came on with the message "Check engine". I switched her on and off to no avail, the message was still there.

After an unbelievable and unceremonious situation with the w*nkers at the AA, 3 hours after my first contact to them a patrol van came over and interrogated the ECU. The result? Faulty EGR valve, fault code PO401!!

The patrolman said I can still drive the vehicle without any issues, the engine won't be damaged. I will contact Ashmoles and get them to order a new valve asap.

Ashmoles are a friendly garage like most Fiat's dealers anyway. THE PROBLEM IS FIAT UK WHO'VE GOT CRABS IN THEIR POCKETS AND DON'T GIVE A F*CK FOR THEIR CUSTOMERS. As far as I can see the EGR valve is a common-ish problem, why don't they instruct their dealers to stock the thing so that we don't suffer?

My issues with the AA will be under another thread very soon. Watch this space!

What a bummer georgios. Got my car taken to my dealer on the back if a tow truck this morning. I use greenflag who have been brilliant and their recovery plus package is great value at about £70 i think i paid. Anyway, the car arrived and after much reving and huge clouds of smoke, it turns out that it was something to do with the Air Intake and that the part would need to be ordered but wont be in before the weekend. Dont really understand why this caused the engine to not respond mind, not technically mind either though!! I have been provided with a Y reg Punto 1.2 i think which is not actually that bad. They are going to fix the seat and brakes at the same time.....if they remember!!

Surely the engine performace and response is restricted with the management light on and you are doing it no good driving with it on??

He should of known better!

Although 99% certain I agree....but it might not be EGR and garages must do their own tests (with reports) otherwise they wont get paid. I had a recent customer with a scudo & he insisted I order a in-tank pump. I said I would if he paid for it upfront & if correct we will refund him if not he keeps it.........it was a fuse:rolleyes:

Garages cant afford to keep vast stocks even of common items however a better distrubution of spares across the country (next day delivery) should be something Fiat should attend too let alone not having certain 'common' parts in the country at all !!

Purely out of curiosity is the main parts warehouse in Warrington still open?

I raised the parts supply issue with the Fiat UK Zone Manager for Northern Ireland. I've met the guy a few times and he is a genuinely nice guy. He gave of his own time to do a presentation for the Northern Ireland Italian Motor Club. I did give him a bit of a hard time regarding parts supply and he did say that this was something Fiat were trying to improve and even showed from his own laptop the current VOR status of various vehicles in the UK and explained how they were chased up etc.

Having said all that they've still a ways to go as the EGR valve for the wifes Punto had to come from Italy and took almost a week.

Today I received a call from Fiat Italy (00390 244412) and they were asking me about the car. I am curious to see what is going to happen after my rant... I'll keep you posted!

Well, I was assured by the patrol man that it is safe to drive the vehicle. Mind you, after 3 tankfuls of Tesco **** I went back to BP Ultimate and the engine sounds considerably smoother and delivers more power lower down the rev range; Not that the car is flying as before the valve went, but at least is a lot more drivable than when it was running on Tesco so-called diesel.

The thing that drives me mad is that I work in South Hook (some 10 minutes west of Haverfordwest) and need a car to get to work, seems Fiat and AA reckon their customers are so loaded they can afford to take a week off to iron out any warranty issues, for sure.

Well they wont be wrong if you work at the LNG plant!!! Im an accountant and i know there is a lot of money flying about on this project, both for my clients and my colleague is the Project Accountant for South Hook. Well i hope it all works out anyway, keep me posted.

I'm only a labourer there pal!;)

Car back today after a few days with the garage. Got there started the engine and bank 'Check Engine' warning!!! They checked to see whether they had reset the memory having changed a sensor and the air flow something i think, but alas it was now reporting a valve not responding properly, any guesses, thats right EGR!!! They reset the car and the fault didnt come up again so got to drive until it does. Apparently there is a delay on EGR valves, the update disk hasnt solved either.

I've been driving my car with the check engine sign on since last Thursday, guess what? On Saturday and today the warning light was off and the car was pulling like it used to! Not that I won't be replacing the EGR valve, but at least the car seems to be curing itself albeit temporarily!

Why didn't your dealer have the EGR valve in stock?

Isn't the EGR valve pretty easy to find on these cars and I'm sure there's some instructions on here about cleaning it. If you don't mind getting your hands dirty and can handle a spanner you could have a go yourself.

Parts supply can't be too bad, I ordered a new battery from my Alfa main dealer (a very good price and guaranteed to fit) and a bit of trim and the battery was there on Saturday when I went to collect it, the trim took 3 days to arrive.
