Do you know the answer to this question?:

It is ok or wrong to do that? What is the meaning of air breather hose?
It's been annoying me for a while now

Sorry if I was unclear, it was in the quote by @Andrii in my reply.

I have a 57i k&n induction kit (Don't use it though,) And when installing it it tells you to block off a small breather hose with a plug that's provided, and I've always wondered what purpose does that pipe serve, and why can it just be 'blocked off' as told to do so in the instructions?

Had exact same problem. Car in for MOT, asked them to find source of petrol fumes in car, was told they found nothing wrong. I decided to service TOH`s car myself and found BOTH breather hoses split in two when I changed the plugs and air filter,( could see split hoses before taking any thing off ) Most garages are a joke. ps; Fiat wanted 11.00 plus vat for the small hose; got some fuel line hose from factors for 2.79

Re: Breather hose replacement 1.2 & 1.4 8v

Hi guys, recently replaced the main breather pipe, and noticed the small, longer one could do with replacing....obviously, from replacing the large pipe, I know where/how the small pipe fixes to the airbox....but....does the pipe just pull off at the other end? Is it easy to access?

Hello,

there is an aftermarket hose on the market with very good quality and with the same size/shape like Fiat original one: IMPERIUM 19182

Where can I find the replacement part? Does anyone know what the part number or name is? Can I fund something at the local independent?

Any advice would be much appreciated.

Re: Breather hose replacement 1.2 & 1.4 8v

Used this guide to replace my breather hose and the thing had a fat six inch crack on one side and two three inch cracks on the other.

Car was serviced by a mechanic less than 3-4 months ago, the spark plugs were supposedly cleaned so they must have taken off the air box, how could they have missed this?

Cool Re: Breather hose replacement 1.2 & 1.4 8v

Replacing hoses is not enough. Three pages and no one mentioned term "PCV".
You should check/inspect entire PCV (Positive Crankcase Ventilation) system.
It's so called "fixed orifices PCV" system (there's no valves, one-directional).
One orifice (bigger, for thick/main hose) is inside air filter box.
Second (smaller, about 1-2 mm diameter) is in the intake manifold nipple (where you connect small hose). Check/clean both periodically. When small hose breaks down, debris can clog orifice "2" (picture explains it all).

Small hose can be substituted by suitable fuel line rubber hose. Don't be that lazy, go figure out the diameters by yourself (you have old one to compare/measure).

Of course, modern materials are better. Old hoses were plastic + rubber blend (PVC+NBR).
Other classic rubbers will not survive very long too (like EPDM).

New, improved breather hoses should be made from FKM+EAM (it's probably "Viton" + something), it feels more like silicone.
