Just a warning to all - it may save some hard earned cash.........

Mrs C's Brava was towed back the other week - suspected fuel pump failure as the breakdown guy had checked the ECU (red key) & inertia/fuel cut out switch by way of press to reset.

As she needs the car every day now I rang my mechanic & ordered the pump. Sadly, £137 from the dealer as it was only place to obtain a Bosch pump within 48 hours.

Straightforward job to change - thank you Boo link - but still a dead Ferrari......

Mechanic checks electrics and (long story short) it turns out to be a burnt out pin (one of three) on the cut out switch.

Because it was a 'rush job' we had our fingers burned so am posting to hopefully save others.

Thanks guys. Its a shame for you that you didn't ask about your problem here first. Not only would yo have been given a description of how to fix it, but there's pictures too :)

A lesson for all indeed, just not the one you thought :p

Remember to ask BOO before spending money, as its usually cheaper to buy through the clubs sponsors, or recommended suppliers, but we can give guides on how to do many many jobs yourself...

for your comments. As you say the guide on Boo is most helpful but as for the "...ask here first for advice, where am I going to find the part that says "...however, if after changing the pump the engine still won't fire check the fuel cut out to see if one of the pins has scorching around the base. If it does, this could well be the problem."

Whilst your assertions are wrong your sentiment is quite right - hindsight can save us fortunes.

For the sake of others is why I posted.....
 
sorry. didn't mean for you to take it quite like that. Its a pretty common problem, but most folk who say 'my car wont start, but turns over with the starter' get told to check the cutoff switch before spending money. Didn't mean to say our advice was wrong or inappropriate. my bad

Not a problem Buzz....it was a combination of my frustration and the fact that Mrs C now uses the Brava every day. Were it not for that need our mechanic could have checked, identified the fault & I'd be £20 down not £140. Like you, he was critical of the breakdown man's diagnosis. As you say, Buzz, to reset PUSH (as it says on the switch....). Unfortunately for us that indicated nothing to the breakdown man as it was one of the pins burning out and not a 'tripped switch'which he would hopefully have identified. Unless you test all the components for an earth you'd no doubt have guessed the pump (as did the breakdown man). In fairness, even our mechanic admitted this.

On the upside, you've got a brand new pump which shouldn't give you any problems for the car's likely life!

Yeah ok, not much of an upside.. but its a positive :)

One of them things but always interesting to read other people's experiences.
