If it's a 1.4, be very worried.

please don't say that - it's a 1.4 SX 1998 with 70,000 miles

cam belt and tensioner done at 60,000 miles...

Depends how bad it is, if it is very noisy then u have problems!

If it is only a slight tapping then I wouldn't worry about it

it is only slight and notcable when Stereo is off.......doesnt do it all the time - just once a week i'd say i notice it

Is the engine cold when it happens? This is perfectly normal if so.

If you can afford it, sell it and buy a 1.2 16V

Prefebly one without gearbox issues.

if its occasional tapping then my 1.4 has done that for the last five years and not got any worse to be honest, cambelt done and it gets a full service every year regardless of mileage, average mileage 3,000 a year so its spoilt to be honest.
