BRAVO WONT START PLEASE HELP

I have a Bravo 1.4sx '96 90k on the clock last serviced approx. 14 months ago which i know is overdue, she is very tempremental, most time she starts and then occasionally she wont. Please help i dont want to send her to the scrap yard.

The conditions very, the last few times are as follows:

1) Warm dry morning. Started first time drove approx 8 miles with half a tank of petrol. No problems at all running sweet as a nut. Stopped the car by turning off the ignition. Returned to the car 20 mins later and she did not start. The RAC man came checked it out cleaned all connections and WD40 them, checked fuel cut off switch was working properly, checked spark on plugs and ht leads, said that the fuel was enterring the venturi (throttle chamber) but was not enterring the engine and said the problem was probably electrical maybe a problem with the ECU suggested a diagnostics should be done, do i want towing anywhere. One last turn of the ignition before i was to be towed and hey prestow 1 hour later and shes running fine. Took her home.

Rang and booked her in to Holland Motors who have taken over Mr Sparks for a fault diagnostics as Fiat could not do it unit 26th August. 2 1/2 hours later started her up fine and drove approx 2 miles parked her up turned off as normal and left her. Rang the garage 3 hours later she could not start her diagnostic showed no errors. The Venturi was dirty so they cleaned inside and out, they think this may be the source of the problem and put a petrol cleaner in the tank. Started the car and brought it to the front of the building, 10 mins later after i had coughed up £100 i went to leave and it would not start yet again. It is still in the garage now, they think that it may need a new injection system at £250 fitted, I am not sure that this will solve it as she runs fine.

I hope you can give me a clue to the problem as i dont want to get a bill for something when that is not the problem.

Many thanks Greg.

i am no expert (understatement) but do you try starting the car back up with the red key ? if so they i reckon it could be your ecu.

i think this is one for tom

Re: Re: BRAVO WONT START PLEASE HELP

Thanks for your reply. I have tried the spare blue and red keys and still had no response. The diagnostics show no errors.

Sounds like a typical fiat hot start problem.

New HT leads, new plugs and a new coil and all should be well.

Just cos the HT leads and plugs look 'ok' does not mean they are. After 7 years and 90k miles the leads are probably shot.

diagnostic

The diagnostic will only show-up major component malfunctions, and even then it's a far from faultless system. Fiat told me I need a new potentiometer as that was what was showing on their diagnostic report. Several months and much hair pulling out later it turned out to be a connector which had fallen out under the dashboard.

Had I had the potentiometer changed it wouldn't have solved the problem. I know this isn't really helping but it could be one of a hundred things. Intermitant starting to me is either electrical (bloody nightmare!) or dirt or plugs or fuel line....

Re: Re: BRAVO WONT START PLEASE HELP

I have spoken to the monkeys at Fiat and they have said to me that they don't think this problem is to do with the plugs, ht leads or the coil because it would run crap and it does not it runs fine. I cannot remember off hand when the plugs or leads were changed. But they can have a look at it for £58/hour. Ha Ha! I just don't trust any garage they can rip you off too easily. So where do you think i should go from here?

Re: Re: Re: BRAVO WONT START PLEASE HELP

Tell them thats crap. If it was running crap then it would be hard to start when cold as well. Fiats seem very tempremental when it comes to spark, they run fine, start fine when cold but won't start when hot and all the times I've seen that its been spark related.

Re: Re: Re: Re: BRAVO WONT START PLEASE HELP

Cheers for your help Tom. I have telephoned Fiat for a price of the parts.

Fiat prices

Coil - £147.63
HT leads - £58.49
Plugs - £8.65 each

I cannot get the coil from anywhere but Fiat, is it worth using a second hand one or just buy new.

Halfords

Coil - cannot purchase
HT leads - £30
or 2 @ £2.99 + 2 @ £3.49
Plugs - £20

Are Fiat trying to rip me off?

Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: BRAVO WONT START PLEASE HELP

Coil sounds about right, I'd try leads & plugs first.

The hellfords universal leads are good but they are a pain to fit. Don't forget you need the lead from the coil to the distributor too.

To fit a hellfords yellow or orange silicone lead:
(note: for distributor and coil ends only)
1) Push the cable through the black rubber boot so you expose the metal contact
2) using a small pair of pliers or screwdriver carefully open up the metal contact, it has a split down one side so open up the gap
3) push the metal contact into the hole in the distributor/coil and make sure its a snug fit
4) slide the rubber boot down and make sure its water tight

The prob is that they are really quite a sloppy fit most of the time so you have to tweak them otherwise you are in a worse possition than before. Once they are fitted they are just fine, I use them on my MG and my Mini without any problems.

Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: BRAVO WONT START PLEASE HELP

I played safe and bought my HT leads from the dealer. Expensive but no messing about and you know they're gonna be right :)

Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: BRAVO WONT START PLEASE HELP

Has anybody done the usual check of looking for sparks when it won't start, or whipping a plug out and seeing if its wet with fuel? At least this will give you some clue if its electrical or a fuel problem (not infallible, I know but worth a try). But for what its worth, my guess would be that the probs between the ECU and the spark generating bit, as its such an on/off prob. Connectors should be cleaned and remated.
Worth a try!

Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: BRAVO WONT START PLEASE HELP

Trust me on this one, you'll see spark, you'll smell fuel, it still won't start.

For some reasons fiat need a bloody big spark to start them when hot. Just sitting the plug in free air is nothing like having it in a hot, compressed mix of fuel and air.

Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: BRAVO WONT START PLEASE HELP

The plugs and leads were checked by the RAC man and he said there was a good spark. But i think i am going to try Tom's advise on this and changed plugs and leads and see how it goes. I will keep you all informed on the out come. Thank you all for the help!!!!!!

Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: BRAVO WONT START PLEASE HELP

The conditions the plug sees inside the cylinder are very different to sitting in fresh air.

Ideally the spark should be able to jump about 25-30mm in fresh air in order to make a good spark inside the engine. Seeing it spark across 1mm or so does not mean its good. :)

I've seen similar probs on so many cars.

not starting

i have had my car now for 6 mouth's and it not going well at all.

i have the same thing with mine and now all i want is to get shot of it.

is has been with the monkey's at fiat from 2 week and they said they can not find what's f£*ked with it.

but when i went to pick it up shock the thing would not start. but still they can't find what is up with it.

so many people have this with there bravo but no one has come up with the right thing for sure.

come on boys show me the money and tell me what it is so i can tell the monkey's down at fiat how to do there job

thank you rob from devon

Re: not starting

Rob, Sorry to here about this problem its really P*ssing me off to. I went to the garage last night to pick it up he said he thinks he has sorted out the problem. He told me he has changed some relays, and ran an injector cleaner through it and he must have started around 30 times, getting it hot and letting it cool down etc. So i went to pick it up at 5.30 and did not get it until 6.45. He told me he was going away and wanted to put the injector through the cleaner one last time (he said he is sure that it needs a new injector). After he walked out of the garage i spoke to the mechanic. He said it has been working fine all day until he came to bring it to me at 5.15 and the thing would not start. Bill £120.

I have ordered plugs and leads and i should get them over the weekend or Monday i will keep you informed on what happens.

Re: Re: not starting

Just tried new leads and plugs. Still no good. I am now trying to get hold of a new coil.

Re: Re: Re: not starting

Did you fit a new distributor cap and rotor arm?

Re: Re: Re: Re: not starting

There is no distributer cap and rotor on 1.4sx.
