Could not find anything related in google! I have a 2002 ducato and fancy a nice android touchscreen headunit, the location of the single din slot I guess it could be done covering the ashtray and lighter below but might not be practical! I thought about removing the middle vents and fitting one there? I just wondered in anyone here has done anything to give me ideas?

Thanks Ronnie

This is what used to be available to convert to double din for the X244 if you wanted to go that way.......

I've been after a two din head unit mount for years to replace my ageing and only part working single din CED780............

https://www.philips.co.uk/c-p/CED780_05/car-audio-video-system

Pioneer do a similar item but it's expensive.

Back in the day the two din mounts were an option for the Ducato, Relay and Boxer chassis, but I don't think anybody makes them any more.

Been known for peeps to make there own.

Thanks for this, mine is the older dash with the radio at the bottom beside the gearstick! I see some headunits now with a 10.1" screen dut very slim at the back, no metal box to hide but the screen is slightly too wide and the viewing angle won't be great down there!

Cheers Ronnie

If your Dashboard is like this then ignore the parts of my my previous message about the two din options. They changed the layout in 2002.

Got me thinking about modifying mine now again.:slayer:

Edit.............You beat me to it!

Hi, I'm also looking at getting a 1 din Android unit for my Ducato 244. I'd looked at using a Dremel to make one out of the existing setup but liked the idea of the bigger screen that the 1 din offers. Some tempting cheap Chinese ones out there that do on the whole look good but I think the aftercare support if anything goes wrong is quite commonly not up to much.

P.S I'm also looking at upgrading the speakers in case anyone has any thoughts or experience doing this that would be really appreciated.

I'm in the process of doing exactly that , right now .

I'm fitting a Kenwood double din , in my year 2000 , x230 . Most of the preliminary work is complete , along with the ancillary wiring , remote mic , rear view camera wiring , and gps receiver . Only the aerial to fit , but i'm stuck on that one due to the position of the van .

Lol go for it! That's my dash in your pic, I was looking at this headunit

Just thought some of you guys may like to see this , further to my last post back in June . I've been working on this , off , and on , for most of the year , but the truth is , i've also got other mechanical work in progress , so it's being kept on the back burner , for when the weather is pants outside .

It's actually fairly easy work , yet it is challenging . I'm working on what is probably a very rare part , and that thought is never far from your mind . But as you can see now , much of that preliminary work is complete , and thoughts are now turning to finish . This , is what makes or breaks any conversion , so subsequently this is what takes the time . Along with the fitting of a new cage , i've also modified the switch panel to accept the cigarette lighter , and a new dashboard clock .
So if anyone's interested , i will update again when it's finished , maybe if the interests there , even run a how to in the future . I have kept a photographic record of certain events , so if anyone wishes to learn from my experiences , you are more than welcome . But for now ! ! !

That looks great airwave! I opted for a dab single din pioneer unit in the end! but dab reception is crap using a splitter thing that connects to existing ariel.

I just wonder how the viewing angle will be for your new HU? I would be keen to see how you have done it all.

Cheers Ronnie

Yeah , i was looking at a single din , flip screen , myself . It was one of only a few that had a particular feature i wanted . However the reviews slated it for reliability , and warned of little , to no aftercare service , so i eventually plumbed for a Kenwood double din . I had come across it by accident during my search , and though it actually cost twice as much (bearing in mind the single din was not cheap) , i did feel much better about it . Of course being a double din did cause extra issues , but I've had Kenwood's before , and they are very good , plus they are reliable . It's an older 2020 model , chosen purely because it had that feature i wanted , plus a cd player . 2021 models don't seen to have this feature , instead relying on streamed , or ipod music . Pioneer's are really good , i've had them as well , but as with any radio , pay particular attention to the speakers , they are the important bit . I'm also replacing my old aerial for an electronic unit , but to be honest , the old one was falling off the screen anyway .

Hmmm , i'm sorry , but in my experience dab is overrated . I often have that service in the trucks , i drive , but frankly i always plumb for fm . Dab sound is clean , but i feel too clean , sometimes even hollow . However , get into a weak area (and there are quite a few) , and it becomes a totally different animal . The tuner spends more time altering the frequency , than actually playing music , and i've even had problems with bridges , like the old am reception we used to have .

So your asking about viewing angle , well i'll be honest here , it won't be outstanding will it . However , my feeling is it will be sufficient . The screen does have an adjustable tilt feature , but even so how often will you actually need to look at it . The gps speaks to you while driving , though yes , there are times when you will want to view it , and what's there to see , once it's tuned .

I learnt to plastic weld , same technique used , to repair a bumper . Actually , i learnt the skill to repair my own bumper , however it wasn't till i started , that i realised it was in a worse state than i thought . To be brutally honest it was scrap , but i worked on it methodically , and brought it back . Took me three days though , but that skill saved me nearly 800 quid . New bumpers cost over a grand , but i spent a bit getting the tools , and materials . It's in paint right now , or at least it would be , if i could get a decent enough day to actually paint it . The dashboard has cost me nothing , the materials were left over from the bumper work .

My dab radio is just single din no screen, I opted for a nav screen suitable for trucks that also has an AV in for reverse camera it has bluetooth also and mounted it on the button panel just below the vents, it's a fairly large screen and you can input the dimensions of the MH to hopefully keep you away from low bridges etc, I upgraded the speakers with newer but same size but not the best sound when driving due to usual noises!

In my experience , that will be the speakers , not the radio . The problem with older vehicles , is that they are more noisier than the newer generation , but to be frank , the speakers on this model duke , are not placed in the best of positions . If your ears where down by your feet , you would get a far better sound . As it happens , for a coach built , my van is comparatively quiet , but then i do have quadraphonic . The rear speakers are basic pod , mounted half way back , under the top lockers . I would like to flush mount them , but with all the other work , that's going on , i honestly don't think i will get the time to actually change them . I also found the front nearside speaker had blown , so as i have the lower dashboard panels off , i am also going to replaced them , but choice here was not that great . The ones i do have are powerful , actually they are capable of handling twice the channel output , plus they are dual cone , meaning they have tweeters built in . I wanted the clearest sound i could get , because these are also used for handsfree output , but how successful i've been , is yet to be heard . The originals where underpowered , for the radio fitted , and probably the reason why one had blown .

Now the screen was the reason i plumbed , for the types i did . I like to keep dashboards as uncluttered and original as possible , and will go to a lot of trouble to disguise any upgrades . Witness what i have done . A hideaway flip down screen would not have been ideal , but it would have kept the dash original . The down side was when opened , it would have covered the heater controls . However , as i said before the reviews were not inspiring , leading me to plumb for the Kenwood , despite the extra work , this involved . This did however , actually solve another problem i had . My originally plan , was to fit a two position switch in the switch panel , but i was struggling to find one , that matched what was already fitted . This is to control a cooling fan i've mounted on the dashboard . It's so far forward , on the dash , i can't reach the thing without removing my seatbelt . So i rewired it to an external switch , that's now fitted below the rotary controls on the heater panel . At first , the loss of the ashtray , and cigarette lighter was of little consequence , as i no longer smoke . In fact the van never did have an ashtray , as the previous owner had replaced it with a reversing sensor display (actually i thought that was knackered , until i realised it was mounted upside down) . However , i soon realised the loss of the cigarette lighter would be a problem , as i had lost a powerpoint . The result is , i've reduced the diameter of centre hole on the switch panel , to accept a new lighter .
