Ducato 3,0 MAXI-front brake pads every 20k miles?

Hi,

on 2011's Ducato 3.0 MAXI we have front brake pads gone every 20.000 miles, and less(seems too frequent to me, smaller ducato 2.3 will last twice(40.000)).

Garage been checking front brakes and theres nothing seems wrong (calipers not stucked, moving freely).

There has been driver change in past and its still the same.

Any ideas??

Thanks

Re: Ducato 3,0 MAXI-front brake pads every 20k miles?

Several possibilities:
-The material may be less resilient than the pads of the 2.3.
-A tiny bit of bearing play may cause the pads to touch the disc on every turn.
-The rubber seals around the pistons may have softened, so the pistons cannot retract far enough.

Re: Ducato 3,0 MAXI-front brake pads every 20k miles?

Thanks for quick response,

I forgot to mention but this occurs from new - I remember there still was one pad on right wheel much more worn than the others. I remember we was trying to make some warranty repair with fiat dealer, but there was ended like "standard behaviour" mostly caused by driving style, and finally pads dont fit into warranty.

Only now its getting worse. Still any ideas? (maybe rear brakes braking worse causing front to wear earlier, some ABS trouble...)

Any knows of 3.0 Ducato's recalls??

Re: Ducato 3,0 MAXI-front brake pads every 20k miles?

Hi,
If one pad is wearing more than the other it is a fault in the caliper mounting. It is not sliding on the mounting properly. This normally causes the inside pad to wear more. Note that the garage will (as they should) change all four pads even if only one or two are worn. The mounting is normally two pins that the caliper slides on. They could be bent. It is possible that the calipers can slide OK when cold in the workshop but bind when the assembly is hot. This can be caused by the mount distorting due to residual stress or normal differential expansion conbined with close to tolerance limit parts.
If it's a sticking caliper that IS a warranty item. Did you see the old pads? If wear is uneven, especilly if only one pad is wearing, insist the garage looks at it under warranty. Drivers can't make one pad wear more than the others no matter what they do.

Another indication of slide pin trouble can be pad friction material wearing into a wedge shape .

If corrosion is not cleaned from the mounting frame that holds the pads, the pads may not able to move freely in the frame this will accelerate wear. This is very basic knowledge though so unlikely for a garage not to know.

Ducato 3,0 MAXI-front brake pads every 20k miles?

I'd deffo go down the slider pin route,
A set of cheap aftermarket pads would last 20-30k
Pagid pads 50-60k

My preferred choice was Peugeot genuine (I could get a good deal on these 35-40% discount) (same as fiat pads but half the retail price)

77366021 genuine part number, 425463 Peugeot part number
(Assuming 77366021 are the correct fit for yours)
BUT I always had to change sliders front and rear or at least remove and clean & grease twice a year, squealing is a sign of seizing sliders As well,

100,000 miles a year courier, been through a few sets of pads
Thanks corcai thanked for this post

Re: Ducato 3,0 MAXI-front brake pads every 20k miles?

Hi,

been at service for checking brakes, result (again) is that everything is working, sliders/pads/pistons moving freely,
have been driving some 500miles during 2days and didnt see any overheating/squealing on any wheel during highway trip.

Will go for another brake check in next approx 10k miles.

Thanks

Re: Ducato 3,0 MAXI-front brake pads every 20k miles?

I've got an iveco daily that the front pads have lasted 70,000 miles and were still ok at last service, so either a sticky calliper or a driver that brakes every time someone comes the other way.
I follow them through the lanes every day.

Re: Ducato 3,0 MAXI-front brake pads every 20k miles?

My Ducato Maxi is just coming up on 10,000 Klms on pads and very little wear. That includes all sorts of driving as it's a camper, I did a complete strip and clean with new seals etc last year, I was amazed how bad the sliders were. These need to be totally free, same for pistons. Complete strip down with new seals, dust seals, slider rubbers etc and see what happens.

Re: Ducato 3,0 MAXI-front brake pads every 20k miles?

Textar lasted 5 mins and squealed like crazy, pagid are good, but use their back plate gel, as they can squeal, I only use genuine Peugeot now, same as fiat but less than half the cost,
Go barter with Peugeot parts guy, they get 50% or 60% off their retail
Price,

Re: Ducato 3,0 MAXI-front brake pads every 20k miles?

we are using same brands for other 2.3 ducatos and pads last twice the miles.
oh and I forgot to mention that 3litre ducato is the biggest L4H3 and smaller 2.3 ducatos are L3H2 size.
