Hi Guys,
I picked up a (cough cough) 01 Citroen Relay hdi (same as a 2.8jtd) last week for a song as it had a bit of engine trouble. The polish lad I bought it from told me that the belt had failed and had started working on it but given up. But on getting it home I found this on the passenger seat

so what happpened was that the lug on the tensioner mount snapped off releasing the tension causing the belt to loose tension and slip. Some modern diesel engines are "non impact" so the valves won't hit the pistons in the event of belt failure but our beloved Iveco engines arent and the results are...

Exhaust valves hitting all the pistons,

Valve snapping and embedding in the head,

and my personal favourite, the damaged head with the bonus of a broken injector!

Is there a sliver lining to this cloud?? Well, some of you may remember a couple of months ago I went looking for a gearbox for a 2.8 non turbo without success but came home with a complete '02 2.8jtd engine for €400. Guess where it's going!!
Keep well,
Torq

I now know what happens just like you recently mine snapped and ended up with a £1500.00 bill for re con head cam shaft broke etc etc luckily no piston damage. tom mix
