Dying Dobby?

Van won't start sometimes. I know when its going to happen because not all the dash lights come on when I turn the key to ignition. When this happens it will crank strongly but make no attempt to fire up. It will not go with a push in this situation. Then another time all the dash lights come on and it will start straight away. Last time it happened van was parked and tried for 3 days then when I turned the key so that the steering wouldn't lock while I was towing it all the lights came on again and I drove it home. One mech says immobiliser, other says fuel. Could it be something as simple as the ignition switch?
Thanks

Re: Dying Dobby?

Hi, my friend Tony who is an Alfa Romeo specialist advised me to check (and clean) all electrical connections. It took a while but after that i had no strange behaviours any longer.
Good luck

Re: Dying Dobby?

The Earth cables can rot internally..

So polishing the ends might not help

Re: Dying Dobby?

No good. Ran a jump lead from - to a lifting eye on engine; - to body; engine to body all to no avail. How do I post pictures here?

The pic with the most dashlights will start the van. The other is what you get when nothing good is about to happen.
Maybe it can point someone to a fault.
Thanks

Re: Dying Dobby?

Its showing the padlock.. for immobiliser..

Are you letting all the 'self.test' finish before cranking?

Re: Dying Dobby?

Yes. I just took the pics quickly to illustrate the difference between the two displays. That's why they are a little blurry

Re: Dying Dobby?

Does the Immob. Light always show..

That will stop the ignition of fuel..so no runnimg of engine.

I once had a bad relay that stopped the CODE system working..
Temperature related issue.. fine if warm..dead if cooler

Re: Dying Dobby?

As far as I can remember, it does. Today I managed to re-assemble the remote key and locked and unlocked it several times but it made no difference. Also there is no power to the fuel pump. Lifted the cover, unplugged it and stuck a test light into all the holes with the ignition on. Both sets of fuses are all ok. Relays were swap tested where they were the same.
