Cambelt, water pump and clutch plastic push rod

2008 1.9 Multijet 105

Never rains, but...…

Had this Doblo for nine years, usual service items, but speaking with a neighbour whose Scenic cambelt let go, l thought when's mine due. Overdue, still on original, 80,000 miles and eleven years
Drove it as little as poss soon as l found out

I'm OK with DIY mechanics, done most of mine and now touching seventy, but fearful of the catastrophic outcome of doing the cambelt wrong in limited space so sought quotes

Best Fiat dealer one was £420 (£60 off they said), but l wanted water pump, aux belt and tensioner done, then was £540. Looked further afield the highest was £960 from a Fiat dealer

Found a local motor engineers with excellent reviews so entrusted them

While waiting for the booked date for the above work the plastic rod from the clutch pedal to master cyl let go.

Drove home with no clutch, got a new Valeo cyl with metal rod which is the same dimensions and won't snapped again - £60 though.

Removing the circlip not the easiest job so broke the old one, but fitted the new rod and circlip to the old cylinder and bled it....three times with the eezibleed.

10psi, jacked the NSF to encourage trapped air etc., but changes were still sticky.

Asked the garage to bleed it while having the above done, but the guy didn't do it, said the rubber seal must have been damaged cos he can pump it up on the pedal and it needed a new cylinder, he said if he can do that it's the seal not air in the system?

Dilemma now
Should l fit the new innards from the Valeo cylinder (not relising doing that cots that circlip - plastic again and a contortionist to reach it), don't want to fit the whole cylinder but will if l must. That might be the easist route in changing the circlip and pushrod on a bench.

Since getting it today. it can get all gears, seems to be settling and smoother than it's ever been, so no urgency.

He also said the crankshaft pulley needed changing cos of play which might cause the belt to break which can collide with the cambelt and we know what happens then.

Didn't have time to discuss further, but anybody heard that before with the pulley or is he more likely talking about the tensioner?

All advice gratefully received.
