I have to renew my road tax end of June.
I am maybe thinking of upgrading my 2003 jtd sometime (if I can afford it!). So do I buy 6 months tax or 12?
Will the tax go up in October, to some ridiculous amount, as has been talked about?

Advice needed please.

Cheers

Lyn

Hi Lyn.

If I were you I'd get 12 months as i) it works out cheaper per month ii) you safeguard yourself against the rate increasing for the full 12 months and iii) you can always cash-it-in (or ask the dealer for more p/x) if you still have a lot of tax left when you come to sell it.

Are you contemplating another Doblo or maybe trying something else?

Peter

Thanks Peter. :)
I guess I'll get the 12 months. I have insurance renewal too in a few days, so lots to pay out in one go. :(

I will definitely go for another Doblo; a later 1.9jtd. Best car I've had :D

66,000 miles. Hasn't missed a beat since bought in Feb 2006.
In the past, we have just kept our cars until they went to the great scrap heap in the sky.

Now I am on my own, I guess I'm nervous being in that situation again, and having to find Loadsa Money to start over. Have I got it wrong?? Should I just hang on?

Oh I don't know......... :(

Hi Lyn,

Following on from Niall's point, I think you may be better to keep hold of it. These Doblos seem to be either 'Gooduns' or 'Baddens' and you to seem to have a good one and we can tell you love-it.

If you had the cash to trade-up, I'd put it instead in one of these savings accounts at 7%+, or if you were going to borrow the balance, I'd stash the equivalent of the new monthly payments into a savings account for when it really does need replacing.

You can never know what will happen with breakdowns etc but there is a very big chance you'll save money by keeping your goodun. The only guy who will loose out is the dealer who would have sold you the new(er) one.

Lets see what the others think!

Peter

Yep I agree. Your existing Doblo will have taken its expensive ride down the steepest part of the depreciation curve, from now on its annual drop in value will be as nothing compared to that of a new vehicle bought now.

If I were in your position with what appears to be a reliable vehicle, i'd hang on to it, keep the sevicing up to date, including items that need replacing based on time rather than miles (coolant, brake fluid) and enjoy watching my saving grow in the bank.

I'm sure a sharp suited flashy car salesman would argue against this, by playing the 'reliability card' but I'd counter this by asking him how much I would loose on the new vehicle before he would deem it necessary to replace it - and line his pockets of course.

Mrs_G's Doblo has done nearly 5 times the miles yours has...... not been perfect but still good enough to justify its keep.

Thanks very much for your input Niall, and Peter.

I have just got the 12 months road tax.

I guess you are right that, if it ain't broke, don't fix it.
It has been a dream of a car (so far) and it would be disappointing to get a newer one, only to find it lets me down. I live out in the sticks, and need something that is reliable.

It is great having this forum to pop in to and ask advice.
Thanks guys :)

Lyn,

The guys are right again!

the depreciatin on a new 08 doblo 1.9 in its first year is around 40% so depending on how much you pay its about 4 / 5000 pounds:eek:

After that it settles until about 3 years old which is where you are now, so even if you had serious trouble with yours it would be no where near the costs of depreciation of a new one.

if serviced properly with quality oils and parts ,as a few on hear can tell you the doblo is good for a long time.

Im with you best vehicle ever owned if you feel its a good'en then keep hold , even if you bought new you could end up buying a "Friday afternoon special":D

Picked mine up on its first birthday for £8k, looked at the new one in the showroom & it was best part of £13k.
Rumour has it that a car is more likely to go wrong in the first year than the next few years - I guess there's bits that need tightening fully, people become complacent (it's a new car, let's see what it can do, what can go wrong? it's new...).

With the £5k saving I asked the OH if she wanted a new motor but she said she was happy with her Astra.
Now getting 8% in my Abbey account (y)

You guys are great Thanks for your help. :)

Sludgenuts, tell me more about the 8% Abbey account. ;)

Keep on dobbin' :D

Got mine for £9,700....brand new :D *gloat*
they had a 1 year old on their forecourt at the time for £10k. I wondered if they noticed they were selling me a new one for £300 less than their 2nd hand one .
Different specs?
They also had a high roof version for a tad under £8k but it was a couple of years older.
( I suspect they'd slashed the price due to the colour putting people off  )
