I have a 1995 16v turbo.

For quite a while now I have had an intermittent problem. When cold the engine will stall on idle, for example when stopping at traffic lights.

Also, it won't accelerate smoothly. It either stalls or bunnyhops. Sometimes I need 3000 revs just to move off. This is not fun.

After a few minutes of this, the idling revs start to oscillate up and down wildly between about 1500 and 500 revs. Sometimes it cuts out completely on the downswing in revs. After a while it smoothes out and the car is then normal.

Its fine after about 15 minutes of driving.

I have taken it twice to a garage. The first time they sold me a water temperature sensor. The second time they cleaned the idle valve, at my request. Neither has made any difference.

Any ideas?

Don't go to Fiat ........
I had exactlly the same problem with my Tipo 2.0 16v.... Turned out to be the Idle control valve, take it off and clean thoroughly with carb cleaner, Carbon deposits build up on the inside plunger and stop it working properly...

It may also be worth cleaning out your map sensor pipe at the same time as these are common to block:)

Already done this:confused:

Anyway I agree with 'pip' i'd check lambda sensor, done few of these recently. Also check plugs especially looking for oil in the 'tunnels' causing misfires.

I had this on my car and it was the map sensor pipe blocked, so have many other peeps on the fccuk forum.

Try this before you spend money on sensors as i spent about £150- £200 on sensors and other bits when i had the prob you describe, and all i needed to do was blow through the pipe

And if they did'nt strip and clean the icv correctly as many don't then this could still cause probs

Cannot be Lamba Sensor when cold as the engine does not use it when the engine is below temperature. When cold, it runs in an "open loop", so bypasses the Lamba. "Closed loop" is when the engine has reached normal operating temperature. The engine goes into "open loop" when the car is accelerated when warm to stop the engine hesitating, so the AFR can be altered.
I would say its the Temp coolant sensor. Did they change the right one as there is two. You could also have a cold air leak that seals when warm. Check all joints, pipes etc.

Is the airflow Metre a genuine BOSCH part?? because i know the aftermarket ones are Not 100% bang on,They are about 98% But that 2% makes it cut out at cold starts as i have past experienced.. also the idling sounds like the lamba Sensor.. also check to see if all the breather pipes and Tightened up properly

does the engine idle higher when very cold compared to when hot? It should do if the CTS sensor is operating properly.
