"Oh no, he's trying to build another computer!"

Yes, having another go at building another PC and hopefully I'll get this one working better than my last...

I've been given a load of cast offs, and I need to identify them so I can know what I can use.

First off, I have an ASUS motherboard - ASUS A7V333 Rev. 1.02. What's the fastest CPU I can run on it? It uses socket A 468 CPU's (I think).

I've been given two CPU's for the ASUS mobo, both AMD Athlons. One has the number 27684 in the corner. There is also a black ID sticker with the following info on it:

AMD Athlon
AXDA2000DUT3C T830496L30564
AIXIB0349RPMW (M) (C) 1999 AMD

The other AMD CPU has the number 27111 in the corner, but it's currently installed in the machine so I can't see the additional details unless I pull it apart. I'll have a look for the full details on it later.

Anyone tell me the faster processer I can install in the mobo (what type/ spec do I need to look for?) and what speed my current CPU's are?

Cheers! :)

You should be able to see your current CPU details by using that CPU-Z prog you had before, for memory or something.

This machine isn't running yet Stu! I've been given the mobo seperately and am currently building it all into a case. Also has a brand new hard disk that isn't formatted and therefore isn't running an O/S yet.

It's effectively a new build :)

Here's the markings on the other CPU. These were embossed on the chip itself rather than on a label. I needed a magnifying glass to read them!

AMD Athlon AX2000DMT3C

AGOIA 0210UPKW

97930930259

(M) (C) AMD 1999 AMD

'27111' is printed in the corner of the CPU.

Which of the two chips is better? And how can I find out what the fastest processor is I can fit to my ASUS mobo? ASUS themselves don't seem to offer any info :(

You can basicly run any speed, as long as you get the proper socket for your mobo. Or are you talking more about overclocking?

Athlon XP - Model 6 (Palomino)
2000 MHz (rated), 1667 MHz (actual)
Socket A - 1.75v
90C Max Temp
256kb L2 Cache
266 MHz effective bus speed (133 MHz actual)

Almost identical CPUs :) The first one you listed is just the newer version (model 8 or 10 rather than 6) but i doubt they'd be much diffeence in them tbh :)

Have you had a look through the PDFs for your Mobo on the Asus site? I started looking through but couldn't find anything. It should be there somewhere tho.

Cheers for the info Xen, much appreciated (y) Wonder why my friend had two CPU's that were virtually the same though?

Can you give me the link to the .PDF file I need to read? I tried looking on the ASUS website and searching for the motherboard but it came up blank. It looks like they aren't supporting it any more.

Parr, no, I'm not talking about overclocking. I want to find out what is the fastest CPU my mobo will take. It get's confusing because I don't really understand the AMD speed ratings (I only had Intel processors so the way the AMD processors are graded is different). I also understand that some motherboards will only take up to a certain speed, and mine is a somewhat early version (1.02). How do the two CPU's I currently have compare with Intel processors?

What I'd like to do is fit the fastest processor/ CPU I can into the mobo to give me good performance. I just need to know what is the limit for the ASUS mobo I have.

Cheers!

wow thats an old MB!

if you have an athlon chip i assume you know about the pencil trick to overclock them?

there's a good site that tells you which bridges to fill in on the chip.

your chip should have 5 L1 bridges so you need this page: http://www.ocinside.de/go_e.html?http://www.ocinside.de/html/workshop/socketa/xp_painting.html
however check with your chip as you may need a page linked below depending on number of L1 and L3 bridges.

for overclocking the voltage options are limited in BIOS on that MB so you'll need to set it using the pencil method and upgrade the bios. i recommend 1.8v

best processor you can use on that MB is XP2600+ but you need to update bios.

for overclocking the XP2600+ on that MB i'd recommend fsb@143mhz and multiplier@10, should give 2860Mhz without getting warm. higher fsb on that MB will probably cause probs, but experiment :)

Jug, thanks very much for that :worship: That's just the information I need (y)

If you think this mobo is old you should have seen my previous PC's  Current machine is running 700mhz PIII and my old PC that was retired last October was running a PII 233mhz

Slowly but surely I'm catching up to the modern world :p
