Hi having problems with changing gear sometime, after sitting in traffic, and wasnt sure what the problems was. Someone suggested checking the gear box oil. Had a look under the bonnet but couldnt see how to. Tried searching on here but cant find any help.

Where in the engine bay do I check?
what am I looking for?
can it be done under the bonnet?
pics of location if possible.

I have no idea when it comes to things like this, but willing to learn.

Thanks in advance

theres a filler hole on the front of the gearbox, think you have to take off the bumper to get to it, i think you fill it up to the filler hole as its half way up the side of the box, however im not sure so someone will know soon.

The filler plug is a 12?mm hex located half way up the front of the gearbox behind the charcoal canister/front tow hook.
It's mounted side-on to the gearbox about half way up. All I gather you do is just fill it until it starts dribbling out and thats your level.
Anyway I did this for my engine swap and the gear change is nice and smooth again.

I would drain the gearbox oil entirely though and top it up completely with fresh stuff (about 2 litres). The drain plug is a 10mm allen key job located just in front of the rear gearbox mount.

Edit: I reckon you might need the bumper off yes but it's not hard to do. Loosen the wheel archs on the front and undo 6 nuts holding the bumper, 2 on top and 2 each side.
You will need a long rubber tube or long necked funnel to get the gearbox oil in the side fill hole. Just fill until it starts dribbling out and it's done.

Here ya go. The first pic is the fill point and more clear is the drain point in the 2nd photo.
Thinking about it, you might be able to get away with running a length of garden hose from the top of the engine bay via a funnel down to the gearbox, it might just fit into the drain hole though I would use a smaller diameter pipe.
You would need to jack the front of the car up to get behind the bumper to under the plugs though but it might not be so accurate when it comes to filling up the gearbox at an angle.
