Question Mystery engine trouble... please help?!

Hi,

I have not really had any probs with my R-reg cinquecento, and with only 35000 miles I didn't really expect too many either.

However, recently I started finding oil in the water and water in the oil. So I had the head gasket changed at a FIAT dealership for around 150. They also pressure tested the cylinder head (which was in perfect order) so we were sure the problem was now sorted.

But, I have now had the car back for a week and I noticed the coolant water is slowly emptying (but again with no visible leaks). There is no visible oil in the water and also no water in the oil from what I can see.

The engine appears to run fine as long as I keep topping up the water.

I have seen that there are a few people on these forums who have alot of knowledge when it comes to the cinquecento, so if you could help it would be greatly appreciated.

Does anyone know what the problem is likely to be? Can you suggest any ways of fixing it (perhaps using coolant system sealant?).

Cheers, Stevie.

Re: Mystery engine trouble... please help?!

I dont have a cinq but have had a similar problem on a rover.

Sometime you get a leak but it only shows itself when you driving as it needs to be under more pressure to appear.
I noticed when i pulled off after dropping a frined off who then waved me back. As i reversed i noticed little droplets on the road, as it was middle of summer i knew they had to be off my car.
For me sealant solved the problem.

Try looking around the bay whilst holding throttle open to build up presusre.

you could drop in a radweld but i would be inclined to go back to the dealers to check over since they did the work

A garage can pressure test the coolent system with the engine off and look for leaks so the Fiat garage that did your HG should do that.

before you pay more money take a screwdriver and check ALL of the water hoses clips are tight, as the garage tightened them cold, and the clips expand when hot, often leaking a bit. Look for crusty antifreeze around the pipe joins and around the thermostat, thats a sure sign of a leak.just don't stnad in front of the radiator while the engines running, as if it does have a pinhole, when it finally goes it'll shoot a jet of high pressure steam at your legs!!
