Question:
For all the Cinq and Sei owners out there running 195/45x14 tyres, what sort of mileage do you get before the front tyres become illegal?
I realise that:
some drivers prefer to run their tyres until the outside edge is virtually bald, then replace them;
some prefer to swap front to rear, or corner to corner (notwithstanding the tyres may well be directional)
some prefer to take the tyre off the rim completely and turn it 'inside out';

I realise this will be largely affected by your driving style; the condition and type of roads you may drive upon; the number of roundabouts in your normal route; and your tyre pressures and /or suspension setup.

Main thing is: I would be interested in just how much variation there is in the wear of a 195 section tyre on the front of a Cinq.

Thanks for your help

The 195 goodyear's I have got on at the moment have loads of tread (~ 8 mm ;) ) They have been on for about 5000 milesa, and have loads of grip. How ever, its easy to get stones lodge in them, which can be very annoying.

It's funny you're asking this as when I was putting on my new front brake pads last week I noticed that my front 195/45 Uniroyal Rain Sports have worn down to about 5mm after only 4K whereas the back ones are still bearly worn in having about 8mm on them, so time to swap them around to keep it even.

Therefore on this I woudl predict about 15K in total from the tyres which isn't to bad considering the power the front wheels have to transmit.

Aaron.

Even on near standard tyres and standard Cinq's like myself the rears last for ages, I get a year from the fronts and I like to change at 3mm because I like to know I'll come out the other side of the wet corner I go into!

Now Aaron is this a touch of exuberance on your part....?:D

So the consensus so far is:

The Goodyears that Joecinq has on have lasted around 5000 miles so far and still have tons of tread left;
The Uniroyal Rain Sports that Aaron has on lasted about 4000 miles and have worn down to about 5mm, so if they start at 8mm, then a life of 8000 miles would be about right if you didn't change them or swap them side to side (which you actually would if you were a sensible man);
The Yokohamas that Applesei has on have done over 10k and have 'miles of tread left';
and Smurfhead has 3x Goodyear NCT Tourings and 1x Pirelli P6000 but we don't know how many miles they've done or how much tread is left.

Applesei, am I right in thinking that the Yokos are A539s? I do like those tyres I must admit.
Joecinq: what Goodyears are you running? I haven't used them on the Cinq yet, although I used them many many years ago on one of the Imps I used to road rally - they were great in the wet, and <interesting> in the dry!

I'd be interested in your thoughts, chaps, and very many thanks for your time.

PS. Of course, this takes no account of grip.....

Possibly, tho I have probably cover more miles than that without relising, I'll give you a better figure if I remember as I can check my last MOT. As i have been to Glasgow and back in its self a 1000miles round trip, back and forward to Bournemouth 4 or 5 times from MK which is 260 round trip so at least another 1000 then Bournemouth to Bath every wkend for 5 weeks which is 120 round trip so to be fair its probably nearer 8-9000miles since they went on and they do have to transmit a bit more power than a normal Cinq.

I can only say good things about the Uniroyals as they are very good dry and amazing in the wet in terms of grip, possibly the best I have ever tried. I have Hankook Ventus on the 'grale which seem to be standing up well including a few laps of Castle Coombe as the 'grale eats tyres.

Yoko's from past experience are good in the dry, rubbish in the wet and wear down quickly due to soft compounds.

the consensus at the mo is that Good Year Eagle F1's are the way out in front in terms of grip, ride and wear but you pay for them if available in the size you want.

That's brilliant, Aaron, just the sort of feedback I was looking for.

In my early rallying days I used the old Uniroyal Rallye180 tyres and they were absolutely brilliant, but then Uniroyal superseded them with the 2 series that were not so good. I haven't really tried any of the newer ones for years but certainly appreciate your input.

Thanks a lot.
