Drove to work as normal (18 miles), stopped for paper, came back out to car and the water light stayed on when I started the engine again:confused:

Drove the last little bit to work, opened the bonnet and plenty of water in the header tank, over the max mark in fact, and the header cap had a slight hiss:confused:

Ideas please:D

Please not head gasket:(

Was the fan coming on if not that will cause the car to over heat and and pressure will build in the cooling system, the cap will release pressure at a certain point and you will get your hiss, or HG has gone and is blowing into the cooling system, take it to a garage and get them to do a sniffer test on it also check the oil filler for creme looking stuff might not see any if its just gone.

check if your thermostat is working by touching the top fat hose ..if it feels very hot its opening as it should and there is circulation in the system.
Also check if your ventilator fan works by removing the plug from your radiator water temp sensor and shorting it with a wire ... the fan should start working.
If however the fan doesn't come on when its running hot, it's either the temp sensor, the plug/connector or air in your radiator.

Thanks for the replies, cant say I heard the fan kick in, so that is a concern.

New water temp sensor fitted recently, the one that iluminates the dash light, is there another sensor to check. Seem to remember there is one at the back of the head??

No gunk in the oil or water, so will bleed it this evening to cover that one(y)

the sensor for the light is a different one from the one I mentioned.
Check the right side of your radiator and you will see it (between the hoses). It's the radiator fan switch sensor, when the coolant reaches 92c it turns the radiator fan on.

Quick update, driving home tonight thought the heater was not very effective, next minute light comes on and at next stop steam is coming out of the radiator cap. Only a very short distance to home and managed to get there.

Let it all cool down and have checked for obvious signs of HGF, but no gunk in the cap and the oil is clean still.

However, have discovered that the fuse for the fan is melted in its holder:(

Have refilled the coolant system, and really made sure it is well bled, as it was warming up the heater is now a lot better than it has been, as good as my mrs car.

However, where should I be looking for the reason the fuse is burnt, and any other suggestions please of things to check!

Thanks,

Hi

If the fuse has blown probably the fan is kaput, the fan bearings should not bind and the fan should run freely if you give it 12V, if either is not true then you need a replacement fan as well.

Also check there is no physical obstruction of the fan, if some one nudges the front near the radiator, the radiator can move of its mounts and sandwich the fan, the fan cowl, and the oil pressure and TDC sensor into a nice mess...

The plastic bumper wont show any damage, there will be a mark on the radiator if you have a front fog.

I'd pull over if safe to do so once the red light comes on, and park for 30 mins with engine off, before thinking about limping to garage or home. Unless you like head gasket replacement.

Mine does have a bump on the drivers side front, so will check if it has moved the rad and caused the motor to burn out(y)

Many thanks

Hi

You may be lucky, the motor may be ok, my fan had 'eaten' the fan cowl, the cowl supports had sheared bolts, but the fan still is 'good'!

You need to put the rad back on its mounts (the mounts are in the front right corner of the car (I removed the inner wing plastic cover, for access) and inspect the cowl carefully. The fan supports may need straightening, etc.

I discarded the fog lamps, and never park where some one can nudge.
