Hi,

I just bought a Cinq and as the title says i could do with a little advice please.
I bought it from a mate at work as his wife wouldn't drive it cos it kept stalling on her.
It starts and runs ok but he tells me that if i run it i'll notice that the revs will drop even with my foot flat to the floor they won't go up.
It then stalls and will be a pig to re start.
He's had the tank off and cleaned out, the fuel line cleaned and the filter replaced.
Changed the plugs and then got sick of it.
He had 3 mechanics look at it but to be honest if 3 of them looked at it and found they couldn't fix it they should be sacked.
Got a couple of ideas myself but i wanted to know the opinions of you guys as you own them and have probably seen the same symptoms before.
I thought about changing the plug leads and the coil packs (just bought 1 looking for another).
Maybe change the MAP sensor (can this be cleaned?)
I did sugest these to my mate before he sold it to me but his wife just wanted rid of it so i bought it from him.
Anyone got a clue??
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks.
Rab.
Sorry i meant to say it's an 899cc engine 1997 cinq SX (am i right in thinking this is the OHV engine?)

id say MAP too, i had a problem with my old 899, fuel somehow managed to get up the pipe to the sensor and caused the problems, the only remedy to it was a replacement sensor and a vapour trap in the line to it.

One possibility is fuel starvation. It may be the fuel tank isn't venting properly, and as you run the car the fuel tank and line build up a vacuum which eventually prevents the fuel being drawn from the tank. You can sometimes check if this is the cause by releasing the fuel filler cap when the car starts misbehaving, if there's a whoosh and the car starts to run OK again - that's your problem.

Just one option to consider.......

Hi,
The problem could be with the engine position sensor, its drivers side end of the engine, outboard of the alternator belt pulley, these can get fairly cacked up with oil and dirt, just give it blast with muck-off or gunk and hose it down.
The other thing it could be is the MAP sensor or the pipework leading to it, its the upside down thing up by the ecu next to the relays, the pipe should come from the base of the throttle body to the underside of the MAP sensor and must have no leaks or blockages.
This thing can be tested quite easily, first remove the pipe and blow through it to make sure there are no blockages, refit the MAP sensor end and start the engine(should run a bit rough), pull a vacum through the pipe(suck) and revs should pick up(run smoother), if it does this then its generally working.

ps. if you use your mouth to blow/suck through pipe remember to clean it first(no jokes please)

If the lambda sensor is playing up it normally makes the fuel injection warning light come on, is this happening ?
If the coil packs were on their way out, I think its unlikley they would both go together, but could be wrong.....

Hope this helps

Thanks

if its the crank/tdc sensor cacked - i thought normally it just doesnt fire up. so it wouldnt even start.

Yeah, youre probably right there, just trying to think of things that don't put the injection light on(he hasn't said its on).........

Could be as julio_scorchio says, fuel starvation, that doesn't make the light come on either. everything is vented through the carbon can I think and is controlled by a "multi valve" on top of the tank, whatever a multi valve is...
Or could even be the pump or relays........

Thanks

Hi,

I'm off work for the rest of the day so i'll take a look at it today while it's still daylight.
Thanks for the info guys that's given me something to try.
As far as i know the injection light doesn't come on and i'll check the fuel tank for a vacuum.
My mate had the tank cleaned and a seal replaced so the tank is good that i know of but i'll check everything.
I first thought on the coils as something similar happened to my Brava about a year ago and after cursing and swearing at it didn't work i relaced the coil pack and the ignition leads and it's run as sweet as anything since.
I'll go and give it a poke with a stick now and see what happens.

Tends to be MAP or Lambda in the majority of cases and next worst is the coil packs and sometimes on occasion the crank sensor.

Hope you got it cheap cos it could be a cheap fix. Just don't tell your mate that!

Hi
I had a look today but it was so cold i decided to leave it till tomorrow and hope it warms up a little or the wind drops at least.
I've got 1 coil and looking for another and i'll just replace the MAP sensor too just to be sure.
It was drivimg my mate round the bend not being able to get it sorted and the mechanics he was useing seem to be a waste of space so he sold it to me in frustration.
I gave him a tenner for it think that was cheap enough.?? :)
