hi everyone just doing some research for my 1.4 16v cinq. i know that fitting all the new wiring is meant to be a real bitch so what is it that i need to attually change obviously i will need to change the engine loom and ecu but what will i need for the rest of the car in wiring terms.

cheers gregor

Depends very much how you're doing it!

If using the 1.4 ECU, you can probably use the 1.4 engine loom, but will retain the rest of the Cinq one. Can't see any reason why you shouldn't be able to splice from the ignition on the Cinq into all that.

If using an aftermarket ECU, J333EVO/foxyemx and Kripit have already done it.

The best and cheapest way to do it if you are not going aftermarket - is to wire in a 1.2 16v ECU from a Mk1 Punto Sporting '85' engine. It will require some loom butchering but is what most of the Greek guys do. Once it is wired in a remapped chip should sort it nicely.

cheapest (although not by as much as you'd expect) is Megasquirt.

Mine was about £150-200 to install...Emerald comes in at well over £500 before mapping or anything like that. Can't get much cheaper.

As JR said, the 1.2 16V ECU is the easiest.

Using a 1.4 ECU you have FBW as mentioned (gonna be a pain replacing the pedals and lots of custom fabrication), plus if it has ABS, ESP etc you have a lot of trickery to fool, else it'll not run, or run in limp mode.

Then add on the wideband lambda controller, lap-top (of course some may have a lap-top already, but if as many folk do and have a PC at home, it is a consideration) and other items needed to map yourself it comes in way dearer, the basic price of Megasuirt is deceptive, and by buying Emerald you get some mapping thrown in which in many cases is enough to do complete it, which if you make the effort to travel to Dave Walker gets one of the top mappers in the UK.

Many r/r operators will not touch Megasquirt, and TBH the best way to map a car is on a r/r, so you still need to factor in r/r time. Whatever way you look at it, its expensive.

There are other options as well, DTA, MoTeC etc if Megasquirt offered everything they did at the proclaimed fraction of cost they would never sell any other ECU's, but they do, so they must, what they are exactly I do not know :D

This is not really a direct point but,

I must also say that if you can't be assed to completely reassamble the wiring loom for the car yourself (I certainly couldn't be bothered/be patient enough) that few custom ECU specialists will be interested in even installing MS for you.

With the Emerald, DTA etc. at least some specialists will fit them for you all be it (normally)at a large cost.

Aaron's point was pretty much the one I was making. Those wideband lambdas add a lot to Megasquirt's cost, plus there's the hastle of finding and paying for a RR prepared to set them up.

Given the requisite sensors, FBW is possible, but a remap on top of a 16v 1242 ECU isn't likely to be much short of Megasquirt money.

The WB lambda issue is a mute point, I've been running an MS with a narrow band lambda sensor for a while now, it's not a problem.

I run both an Emerald K3 & an MS-II. What the emerald K3 delivers over the MS is ease of use & mapping speed. It took, quite literally, about 1/2 the time to map my turbo Sei first time round on the emerald compared to my N/A Sei on the MS-II. That mapping time you'll notice long after the initial cost of the ECU has been forgotten.

ok guys i got kinda lost with everything but think i mite go with the 1.2 16v ecu and do some wiring work but on a scale 1 to 10 how hard will it be to do the wiring and how much do you think the remap would set me back after i have done the the wiring.

cheers gregor

If your lost, research, read, re-read and research some more.

Wiring up a 1.2 16v ecu is not too hard, but depends on your schematics, skill level, etc. I could do it easily, but i've delved deeper than a lot, because i enjoy it, and find it fun.

A remap of the 1.2 16v ecu....not a clue, speak to GSR is your best bet. Angel Tuning won't touch it with a barge pole.
