After a search through the site I still cant find the info I need.. very simple question...well more than one really ..:)

Is it possible to check the gearbox oil without the car being on a ramp or pit so that its level ? I do not have access to either and need to do this as a priority !

Has any one any tips ? Also if there is oil on the gaiters but no splits to be seen how do I remedy it ? does it mean a complete strip down or can I get away with sealing compound on the ..( I assume there are gaskets there ) .. gaskets ?

OK seen the problem I had to put 2 pints of oil into the box...and its the wheel end of the gaiters that are leaking on both sides ..

Is this a sealed bearing or somthing ? The gaiters themselves look ok, no tears and not brittle etc..

Is this an easy job to do ? I have not seen anything in a search I did on the subject.

cheers

its the gaiterss are "wet" meaning they hold the gar box oil in. And they mate onto a lip at the in board side and round a bearing on the out board (wheel) side. They should be sealed down at either sidewith metal clips (abit like jubilee clips but they dont have screws on them). Make sure these are on and tight.

It could be that the boots have gone. Its not a massive job to replace them.

Infact, i did mine last weekend and have the pictures to write a guide with.

The gaiters themselves look ok and it apears the oil is comming from the bearling itself .. does this bearing come as part of the kit ? or has it to be sourced seperatly ?

Hi fella any chance of a copy of this guide of yours asap .. ?/

I am now sure the oil is leaking from the bearings that the gaiters are fitted to and not the gaiters themselves.. I shall keep topping up till I get a decent idea of how to go about the job and its costs

Sorry mate been away for the weekend. I'll sort it out tonight and whack it up. Theres no seals, the kit just comes with the gaiter and the clips the bearings are already on the shaft and the gaiter just seals against them under the metal clip.

Thanks fella .. I have checked again and I am sure the oil is comming through the bearings themselves, and not from the gaiter is this possible ?

Can the bearing be changed ? or am I looking at two new driveshafts with new bearings fitted to solve the leak. ? That seems a little drastic ..

that would do it. i didnt even know you could buy the bearing/roller. i though it was part of the drive shaft itself. The boots are different for either side so make sure you get a passenger side and a drivers side, not to passenger sides like me.

Cheers for the time spent anyway ..

@ rallycinq cheers I wiil do that .... I have asked fiat for a quote but they seem more interested in selling me new shafts . typical exchange rather than repair policies ..
