I have a 2007 Fiat Punto (34000 miles). I had problems last winter with the car not starting in extreme cold weather. I was told by the Fiat garage that although my battery was relativly new (12 months old) and met the Fiat specifications a stronger battery was required. I had no further problems when I bought one.
After the first very cold snap of this year, again my car will not start! The lights on the car are bright, the battery is only 12 months old. What could be the problem? I desparately need a answer so I can use my car!
Any advice welcome.

I've just put a new battery on my 2006 doblo 1.9jtd. Amazingly, the original is exactly the same spec as the batt on my son's 1.4 petrol fiesta WTF? how on earth can Fiat think that a good battery for a 1.4 petrol will be suitable for a 1.9 diesel? The new batt is almost double the Ah and CCA of the original.

But I was thinking about the problems of diesels not getting warm quickly - mine takes about 3 miles for the heat to build up.

So I'm considering some sort of preheater. Spliced into the coolant system & plugged into the mains for about an hour on cold mornings, it should not only help warm the cabin quicker, it should also be hugely beneficial for the engine. (I'm wondering about a tee off - if possible - and sending a small silicone tube around the battery a few times, the warmth should help the battery do its job better)

Welcome to the nice world of cold weather :)

I couldn't even dream of starting my Bravo without my engine heater as it is right now. Even if I tried it just wouldn't have a chance as it is -30°C here at the moment. And mines a petrol so if you have a diesel it will benefit from pre heating all the way from +10°C and below. It will be more economical and will wear less on both the engine and yourself on a cold day.

On the other hand my battery doesn't get pre heated other than the residual heat from the engine block and I don't have any problems with it but I'm sure it would be beneficial. (y)
