So my 1.4 90bhp Bravo has a noisey gearbox and I'm looking into replacing it. It's actually pretty oily underneath so I wonder if it just went low on oil.

I know that other engines in the range have gearbox trouble but statistically, is this a troublesome box? My mechanic recommended splitting the box but I'm actually tempted to replace it at home which would be a first for me.

I'm just worried about fitting a breaker box and finding it no better than my own

Does it mechanically work ok? Gear changes smooth? Doesn’t pop out? Any movement in the gearstick when you’re setting off from a standstill? If it’s leaking then I guess it’s got to be taken apart either way.. but there’s always a risk with buying second hand, especially gearboxes and such other sealed units where you can’t see what’s going on inside :)

It really works just fine apart from the chattering bearings. Mechanic suggested stripping it and doing the bearings. I know the most economical think is to find a good box but I'd love to know what the odds of more trouble would be. There's one at a breaker nearby so I'm thinking about taking the plunge.

I don't know what gearbox is fitted to the car but if it's one of the M32 six Speedo boxes
You'd be allmost certainly better fitting new uprated bearing's as lots of those boxes have issues with them

It's definitely not the M32 but I it's the C514.6.13 - that's what I'd written down before.

How does that sound like? Mine just went into this... https://youtu.be/fXIfUpRmplo

I am going to get rebuild one and switch those instead. I am just pissed on myself, I should my T-jet instead of this Fire engine, at least it will be more funny to drive and I will get myself into troubles with gearbox anyway. So sad that Fiat is having same gearbox issues from the end of 90's and it still persist. I am curious when those problems will show up with new Tipo.
