I know there are lots of old threads around with questions on fuses and I've been through a good chunk of them and I'm still no wiser :(

I'm gonna tell the whole story for anyone else who is having this problem including the things I have learnt from other threads and the things which have tried and then the bit that I'm still stuck on - which hopefully I will get a resolution for, if so all the information can be in one place for others to find. For this I ask you to read through but bare with me...

I have a 57 reg Fiat Bravo Active 90 5DR - 1.4 Right hand drive.

For the last few months I've had an intermittent fault with my left side light and left brake light. The yellow/orange bulb shaped warning light comes on and the message flashes up "Check Left Side Light" and/or "Check Stop Lights".

1st time it happened I got home and did full checks on all my lights everything was working fine and by the time I got back in the driver seat the light had gone off. Sometimes it comes on and I have managed to pull over check it and found that the brake light is not working on the left side of the car but then the next day its fine again.

So I know it can't be the bulbs because they don't miraculously fix themselves. I'm pretty sure its not the bulb connector needs cleaning else it would only be a fault in one light not both at the same time. So my best guess is the fuses are playing up or there is a loose / broken connection somewhere in the wiring.

I had the car MOT'd and major serviced last week and specifically asked them to look at the problem but they said there was no fault on the day it was in the garage so nothing they can do - which sucks!

So being a hands on kinda girl who's changed fuses in other cars before I figured I'd have a poke around see if any of the fuses look duff and fix it... only one problem - the fuse box is a nightmare!

The manual states the fuse box is in one of 3 locations:
1) Under the cubby hole to the right of the steering wheel - checked there and found the connector for the diagnostics.
2) In the boot - nothing in the boot.
3) Under the bonnet by the battery - There is a fuse box here and it has a map under the cover of what the fuses are which says some of them are to do with lights etc but the map and the actual layout are not the same and the majority of the fuses are big chunky ones so I know there must be some more somewhere.

So I came on the forums and found numerous queries of the same nature relating to where the fuses are. One insisted it is in the cubby hole another said it was in the glove box, so back out to the car checked the glove box nothing in it and no indication of a secret cubby hole inside the glove box...

Back to the forums, a different thread said it is underneath and behind the glove box, so back out to the car and success there is a lovely fuse box with lots of little fuses and even the standard little tweezers for swapping them out... but I'll be damned if I can get to blooming thing!

Its in a really tight space and appears to be bolted to a metal frame which is not gonna budge, and its facing the back of the glove box not down to the floor so I would have to try to get the little tweezers onto the right fuse without being able to see as my hand would be in the way and then pull the fuse sideways to get it out, and god knows how I would get a fuse back in if its one by the top!!!

Back to the forums again various people have found the same fuse panel and had the same problem accessing it some helpful answers of "its awkward but you can do it" were getting a bit frustrating so I've been back out to the car again and undone various screw in the glove box to try to take it apart - still no joy and now my glove box makes a weird ratchety noise when I close it :bang::cry:

So back tot he forums again and i can find no further advice on how to actually access the fuses so I'm begging, please, before I take a hammer to my glove box and before my granddad/Step-dad/Boyfriend moan at me about my brake light one more time - is there anyone who can help me???

If it stops raining I might go and take some pictures of it!

I had a similar issue with my brake lights. Turned out to be the bulb. The filament had broken but if I hit a bump or something it would connect back up.

I would recommend replacing both brake lights at the same time and see if that sorts it. Then look at fuses. The bulbs only cost like £1 each.

Thanks for commenting Freebo,

I'm pretty sure its not the brake light bulb as its simultaneously affecting the front and back lights on the left side and also it doesn't fix intermittently (from going over a bump etc) it can goes days with no fault and then it pops up again and stays on for a few days - back and forth back and forth days at a time no. It has a habit of developing the fault when I am sat at traffic lights with my handbrake on and out of gear - this happens whether I have my headlights on or off - so even when the headlights are off and my foot is off the brake so having no input on the brake light it suddenly develops the fault.

As I said it states "Check Left Side Light" and/or "Check Stop Lights" from what I can tell by looking for the fault the "Left Side Light" refers to the left fog light which also comes on with directional steering at low speeds and yet the fault develops when driving in a straight line or when stationary with the wheels pointing straight... from all of this I still think its the fuses

All I really would love to know is how to properly access the fuses without taking a sledge hammer to my glove box or bending my fingers past breaking point...

Can someone please upload the fuse box layout from the glove box compartment. My a/c fan has stopped working. Wanna check the fuses. Please help

All the dash works fine, I still hear the flaps adjusting when I change the positioning... Does that mean anything to you?
