hiya ime new to the forum .so my brava is producing a lot of white smoke but runs\starts ok but when i unclip the injector needle lift valve the smoke disapears but has harsh diesel knock and doesnt pull too well anyone any ideas as it is not registering a mill light exept when you remove the plug on the injector :(

usually if white smoke is still visible after the engine has warmed up, i'd suspect one or more bad injectors, retarded injection timing or a worn injection pump. low compression can also be a cause. also air in the fuel system can cause it too.

your engine is common rail so the injection pump cant be to blame (it doesnt have one) in this case i'd suspect one of the eddy current sensors built into the injectors is faulty. these sensors provide the exact timing/displacement behaviour of the needle valve.

this car does not have common rail injection and only one needle sensor on no1 cylinder .can you post a diagrame of the pump as i suspect a timing solenoid on the lucas pump thanks

sorry havent got a diagram. haynes doesn't cover diesels as far as i can remember because not enough of them were sold :(

but if it isn't a common rail setup and unclipping the lift valve stops the smoke, then i'd think the pump circuit is a good place to start fault finding (y)

hiya ;iguesed the problem was timing related but has anyone got any clues to the cause the pump advance is powering up but suspect it aint doin much anyone had this problem before as i cannot find an iota of data for this engine anywhere and the haynes manual is near useless

thanks guys is the pump setup the same on both cars? ime veering towards

timing solenoid on the pump as its making a buzzing sound :bang:

but not doing very much unless you tap it with something

The pump on the marea TD100 is the same. The advance solenoid is the most likely culprit, but also check the wiring from the pump, especially at the engine loom connector..

Owen.

hiya styler .do you know were the connector is asive had a look but cant see it all i saw was the connector to the throttle position swith . oh and any idea where to find an advance timing solenoid incase i need to buy one .and a rough idea of what itle cost lucas say £80 is that the case .isuspected the wiring because the fault is intermitent but can the actual solenoid do that

thanks for all the help so far...shuggy...

the connector is tucked away at the back of the engine, above the bellhousing and beside the battery. follow the wires from the stuff on the pump if you cant see it. disconnect the battery, then try disconnecting and reconnecting the connector a few times. yes, solenoids can go intermittently faulty . Dont know what it costs cos I havent had to replace mine but I'd say thats about right. A fiat dealership or diesel specialist should be able to get it. Have you tried diagnostics to see whats going on ?. even though there's no injection light, there may be faults stored so its worth a try.. a fiat dealership or independant garage with good diagnostic equipment should be able to have a look..
