Hi
I have a Brava sx80 1.2.
For a while now its been using alot of oil and ive been told thats its possibly the rings that have gone.
But in the last few days i've had a lack of power and i was on the motorway yesterday and was struggling to get past 60 but then all of a sudden there was a big bang and loads of white smoke.
I got back home and saw the exhaust back box had exploded ,and spoke to a mate who dad knows about cars and he seems to thing the problem with the rings is causing the exhaust to carbonate (think thats right) and it got blocked and thats why it blew.
I cant afford to have the rings done in a garage as ive been told its a big job but with the exhaust ive seen them on ebay for £55 (after cat-rear).
Is it not possible to just replace the back box with a similar one or a universal one, but if not how hard is it to replace the full exhaust at home on normal ramps?
i know how to do it well i'm pretty sure i do lol ! ,its just wether theres space for me to do it
What do you guys reckon i dont really want to spend much as i cant see this car lasting a great deal longer
Thanks for any help
steve

The hardest part of this job is getting enough room under ramps to get the old exhaust separated and off without gouging your knuckles, showering your face with muck or catching bits of clothing. I've vowed I'd never do it again and would always take it to the local exhaust centre. I found working under ramps just too much like hard work. But, the Brava exhaust doesn't need a lot of threading through to get it on from what I can remember, the most irritating problem (apart from access under the car) is tearing one of the rubber mounts if it's perished. On a Sunday afternoon when you need the car on a Monday.

It's not that hard, i've changed mine with only two axle stands placed on the back of the car. Mine is a brava 1.6 16V, the exhaust is a bit different, meaning that the flexible mounting is before the catalyst, and the catalyst on mine, is in place of the flexible mounting in the picture, and the circles show were mine was broken :), like this:

So i don't tink you have more then that to fix. I used a welding blow torch, at a local firm, done by my father inlaw (y).
