Managed to get the head off my banger car having had worn cam lobes and found that nearly all of the valves, inlet and exhaust are bent. All are letting petrol run through when in closed position.

1. How much will I expect to pay for a new set of valves?
2. any ideas of second hand head costs - anyone bought one recently?

Anyone in Wales (or shropshire at a push) got a cheap second hand 1.4 12v engine lying around they don't need?

Cheers

David

If the only issue was a worn cam then they are not bent they just need re-seating they will have carbon on the seats.
Get yourself some grinding paste and a sucker stick.

you reckon? I will give it a go, quoted £100 for a full set, so willing to try anything. What's the best DIY method of checking straightness when they do come off just in case, not wanting to find out they are still bent after putting them all back in.

lots of turning coming my way then!!

Cheers

Dave

The simplest way is to put them in a drill and run it really slow, you will see if its bent.
If you had no other issue than a worn cam i would bet my breakfast they are not bent.
Anyway even if you buy new valves you will still have to re-seat them anyway so best try it now before you shell out £100.

Cant see the valves bending unless they have hit the pistons. and if they hit the pistons you will have holes in the pistons.

check the stems are stright by rolling the stems on a piece of glass... easy and fool proof way of checking. drill will only work if they are bent a lot as there are to many variables in the drill chuck/bearings.

What are the followers? is that the flat (ish) bits that go from the tapets to the valve under the cam lobes. if so i have 2 sets and can chose the best ones.

Monday night is valve remove night, with drill / glass at the ready for straightness test.

valves now out. 4 of the inlet valve are definately bent, on closer inspection they have at some poiint collided with the pistons, maybe one or two teeth slipped on the cam belt. don't remember it happening mind. the rest are seriously dirty, so cleaning and more checking required. I have 6 spare inlets from another headwhich i hope will yield me 4 decent ones. thanks for all the help, will report back if I get going.

Hello
could you tell me how you took the valves out, belt snapped on my ducato and I need to get my vavles out to check them but how do they come out?

Sorry been away for a week.

took the head off and used a valve compression tool borrowed from a friend. I don't think it can be done without taking the head off, although someone more knowledgable with the right tools might argue otherwise. I have seen it done with a G clamp and modified bit of copper pipe.

If you can get the tool it take no time at all to do it.

(have just bought a spare engine in case I don't get this done in time for the racing season)
