hi there new to this site can anyone help, i have just bought a brava td an i have a problem with starting the car when its cold it takes 4 or 5 turns before it will start, its had new air filter, fuel filter and glow plugs once car has started it starts fine, also slightly smokey, any help/advice would be appreciated

that sounds expensive is there nothing else it can be? summat that can be an easy fix maybe? clean summat up or owt, noticed the other day on the fuel filter wot i think is the fuel pre-heater plug was unplugged so i plugged it back in but made no difference

Joske is quite good on the Fiat diesels.
My initial response would have been glow plugs however I see you have done them.

I would turn your ignition on light up the glow plugs and once the glow plug light goes out repeat the process a second time. Will heat up the cylinders and aid combustion better.

I would of first thought glow plugs, but you said they had been changed. Is the battery ok? Usually if the car struggles on cold days in winter its usually battery, glow plugs, air in the system (Air leak) or worn cams. What mileage is your TD? I had a Corsa Diesel on 105K and it struggled in winter, had the cams skimmed and it started on the button in winter. It cost me £120 -£150 for the work to be done.

Heating the glow plugs several times before starting should help but its not a fix.

Could be other things of course but you've ruled them out.

The smoking your experiencing is excessive fuel burn, the is caused during each unsuccessful start your pumping fuel to the engine, when it does start it burns all the fuel in one big poof of smoke. :)
