I have a P reg 1.6 ELX Brava and i cannot get it to start.
Basically it turns over fine, but doesn't seem to ignite, although it did ignite once or twice. There is also a worrying plasticy burning smell inside the car when turning the ignition repeatedly

It stopped starting after i jet washed the wheels as they were covered in mud. There are a few traces of mud along the under carrage, but not a great deal around the main electrics in the engine.

On the dash the key code light comes on, but on most occasions goes off again, as does the injector light, the oil light stays on although i have check the oil level which seems fine, but i topped it up to max just in case.
The battery is fine and the starter motor is doing its job and all earth points seem solid.

I have checked the spark plugs and (confusingly) they seem to be firing fine, i can also smell petrol in the cylinder after testing the spark plug.

I'm starting to run out of ideas and as i have just lost my job, i really can't afford another expensive garage bill. So I'd be incredably greatful for any top tips or advice anyone could give.

Thanks
Alex

This could be a problem with your throttle body unit (single point injection unit). I had a similar problem with mine and I believe that what failed on it was the air temperature sensor although I couldn't confirm this as I bought a second hand unit from a scrap yard (£65). This appears to have cured so far (7 months!)

Hope this helps

Under your Driver seat is a black button,if you push that button,it shut be able to start again.
Normally when you have a accident with the car the fuel gets shut off to prevent fire/explosions.
Just give it a go.
