How would you tell if only a few of the cylinders are working?

car idles fine, however doesnt rev above 3000, and the revving is not very responsive with the accelerator.

why mite it not rev above 3000rpm? Also seemed to be really loud before it got to 3000 rpm.

The car hasnt started for months, but now idles fine. When it was given some revs, lots of white smoke was coming out.

Any ideas what the problem could be? and how would you check if all cylinders are working?

Thanks in advance

Is the injector light coming on at all ??

Usual cause for the lack of power is the MAF, but could also be many other things too..

If one or more of the cylinders was out, you'd have a lot of stuttering from the engine, even at tickover..

Ideal solution is to get a diagnostic check done at a decent friendly garage..

sitting for months, a loud noise and rev limit all means its time to check the exhaust carefully for leaks and cracks.

yea it does feel like something is blocked/leaking slightly either into, or out of the engine.

It now idles fine, however any revs, the engine revs dont follow when your foot is put down.

it will only get up to 3000 revs sometimes, if i real gently put my foot down. If you whack your foot down, feels like it will cut out and doesnt rev.

Hows the best way to check for exhaust leaks? the cars on axle stands at the moment. but should be able to get some ramps if needed. does a leak affect the lambda sensor which then through the ecu doesnt allow it to rev much?

This is the first fiat ive had, although i can change a gearbox.. i havnt ever had much experience with exhaust/petrol problems.

Thanks

Easiest way to check for exhaust leaks is to get the engine running, get under the car then get someone to temporarily cover the tailpipe with a rag. The gases will then be audible (and possibly visible) through the leaks.

If the car has not been run properly in a long time then I would expect a lot of white smoke from water condensation in the exhaust. If its not a damaged exhaust then at a guess I would be looking at a maf sensor. or fuel pressure.

very good advice my friend. your were right on the mark. It was the MAF sensor! and there was alot of white smoke at first! going to try and clean MAF, if not get a new one,

But now sounds like the thrust bearing has gone! makes a horrible whirring/grinding noise when i put my foot just slightly on the clutch. and when in first, the wheels are hardly spinning round even with 4-6000 revv's, when they should be flying round.

IS this the thrust bearing? am i gona have to put a whole new clutch in?
thing is i have to do all the work myself. car has been on axle stands for the past 3 weeks.
