I have a 95 Barchetta, it has developed a problem wher above 4000 revs the engine takes about 5 seconds to come back down to idle. i have tried all the normal things like cable, injector cleaner etc but no good.I took it to a Fiat dealer who put the computer on it charged me £80 and could't come up with a fix, the computer said there was no fault? they recommended i change the throttle position sensor (£32) which i did but still the same. I don't want to give any other jokers the pleasure of my money when they can only put it on a computer.
Any ideas welcome, its an intermittent problem but there 80% of the time. Anyone else had the same problem?

If you ring DTR they know everything about barchettas. mine used to do the same thing, but it was cured when they did the variator.
there is some info at http://www.fiatbarchetta.com/club/uk/
about the variator and theres a link to DTR site as well.
good luck
Andrew

Thanks for your reply! DTR changed my variator about 6 months ago and i have spoken to them about this problem but i need to find the time to get down there. I have changed the ECU temp sensor on the thermostat housing and that hasn't changed things either. I will post the fix once i find it though. As for your parts i tried a company near Northampton on www.itapart.com they have 4 Barchettas listed as being broken. I have asked for a bonnet but they havn't replied yet, they may be able to help you. Good luck and thanks again

Good luck with DTR. I found them one of the rudest and unhelpful people in the marketplace. I think its something to do with their monopoly of the barchetta UK scene.

You dont say where you are Jake otherwise I may be able to suggest a couple of places

Thanks for the reply! I know what you mean about DTR, ive had some good and some poor responses from them. Maybe if Fiats service departments had a little more engineering and troubleshooting knowledge instead of just being "Gameboy" operators DTR may not be the only alternative. I have put a complaint into Fiat about the dealer that robbed me and i'm awaiting a reply but i wont hold my breath. I live in the Bedfordshire/Hertfordshire area if you know of anyone with more idea. I know some local guys that would have a go but at least they were honest enough to say that they would probably end up just changing bits till they get a fix, it may prove to be a wire or earth fault. Whatever i find i will post it. Thanks again

I used to have a Barchetta and had this problem.

There is a air/fuel type sensor on the top of the engine - easy to take off and clean with solvent - worked a treat.

I can't for the life of me remember the proper name for it - try the owners club, they'll know.

Hi again, tried that valve, its called a electro valve, it had been cleaned a couple of times but nil fix so i got a new one from fiat, a bargain at £170. Crossed fingers but still didn't fix it. The summer is on its way so ill have a closer look now its getting warmer.

dont know if this applies to the barchetta but
A fault caused by a faulty temperature sensor located in the corner of the inlet manifold - gear box side. These sensors suffer from dead spots in the linear operation of the sensor at certain temperatures as the coolant heats up, this causes the ECU to think that the engine is running colder than it actually is and therefore adds more fuel and a higher idle speed to compensate. The sensor should be replaced and the two short lengths of wire that connect to also.

Hi,
I hope you may have got your sticking revs problems sorted by now. i have only just joined The Forum, but had the same problem a couple of years ago. thought of all those expensive valves etc, but it turned out to be somtheing very simple, but hard to see.
In my case it was caused by the rubber grommet seal that is on the end of the accelerator cable linkage near to the the carburettor (well it's really the butterfly housing, but it look like a carb).
with age, this rubber grommet seal had decided to slip off the outer of the cable where it is meant to stay and prevent dist getting in to the inner, and had instaed slipped down the cable and was intermittently causing tension to remain on the cable, due to the extra thickness it added to the inner cable, and caused the revs to stick at a high RPM. not good when trying t o slow down for a round about etc! .
the accelerator pedal felt like it was coming fully out to the idle position, but because the rubber bit had slipped down the cable and was wrapped round the butter fly valves rotary mechanism, the valve was sticking partly open. simply cutting the rubber seal off with a shap knife instantly cured the problem! regards :)

Hi there,

I have a similar problem with my Barchetta, apart from it tends to suffer lack of power and bubbles via the exhaust, full acceleration only coming after a hesitation which can either be long or short. At idle sometimes it almost stalls before the revs rising again, my Fiat dealer cleaned the fuel system with an injector cleaner which made the problem disappear for a week then it came back.

Very annoying as it is hard to trace, particulary since injector cleaner seems to resolve for a temporary period. I cleaned the electro-valve with no effect, hope you manage to resolve your problem - DTR are looking at my Barchetta next Monday.

Best wishes,

Mike.

Hello,

I have a different problem with the acceleration... If i drive it with 50km/h at 2000rot/min and i change the gear and press the acceleration i hear a sound like a ringing bell for a couple of secs... and just when pressing the acceleration.

what could be?

thanks.

hm... does it sound like that? i was recording sound of exhaust, but you can hear some ringinginging... some guy told me that could be valves... but not sure.
