My speedo gave up a few weeks ago althogh the trip etc were still working, a local garage fitted a new VSS and when it came back nothing worked. I then tried a Fiat main dealer in the next town who got everything except the speedo working they told me I needed a new clock cluster at the cost of almost 1200! I managed to buy a second hand cluster and fitted this myself. Everything was fine for the first day but now the speedo has stopped again any ideas out there?

My speedo stops working when the car's been parked in the sun. Usually it works again after a gentle tap, which makes me think it's sticking in the 0 position. It's not an MOT item, so I haven't bothered getting it replaced (I work out my speed from the rev counter, so driving my B also helps keep my mental arithmetic sharp :D).

IIRC, there's a thread on here somewhere about how the instrument dial circuit-board can suffer from dry contacts, and that a bit of judicious resoldering often cures the problem. I don't think that's what's up with mine, however, as I can't see how tapping the darn thing would cure that particular problem.

You probably have a bad connection in the connectors or a damaged speed sensor. The speed sensor is located in top of the gear box.
It's also possible that the second hand cluster is broken too, because the speedometer problem is very common and caused by dry joints in the circuit board. It's very easily fixed by just re-soldering the joints.
I did a small tutorial once.

Had a new sensor fitted by the main dealer and a solder seems intact.

Gar074, dry joints do exactly that, they work intermittently depending on temperature, vibration and sometimes do other weird things too. I used to tap my speedo too to get it working again.
Dry joints are sometimes very difficult to spot, even with a multimeter, so if your speedo does that, consider re-soldering just in case :)
