Performance Direct Insurance rip off

Just to warn you guys who are in the middle of sorting out insurance. I took out a policy with Performance Direct yesterday after finding they came out near the top on comparison websites. After going through all the details online I then had to do it again with someone on the phone. We agreed a price and she took my credit card details and took the money. She told me someone would have to call me again that evening from their legal team to confirm the details - although why I'm not sure as I'd already given them all the info twice, once on line and once to her!

Later that evening someone called Ian phoned and went through every single detail with me yet again and then said a price which was 20 more than I remembered. I didn't have the paperwork to hand and asked if he was sure that was correct and he said yes, that is what I had agreed to on the phone earlier, he could see that from the records that was what had been taken from my card. The more I thought about it the more I was sure he had put the price up. I rang them back this morning and I was right. I spoke to someone else and she confirmed that Ian had taken a further amount of nearly 20 from my card, she tried to tell me he had done it by mistake, but i pointed out that he had misled me and told me I had already agreed to the amount and it had already been taken from my card earlier which was a blatent lie! She agreed to refund the extra amount (very good of them!) and said a manager would speak to Ian.

I am now waiting for the paperwork to see if I can cancel the policy without incurring some ridiculous admin fee, but would recommend that anyone else avoid this company. I don't mind an honest mistake but this was an obvious ploy to make an extra 20 by misleading me.

Sorry to hear, shocking customer service appears to be widespread these days.

I'm sure the distance selling regs would allow you to do something here, anyone up to speed on them?

I'm sure that there is a cooling off period for car insurance. You should be able to cancel with 14 days without losing out. However, if they have 'covered the car for insurance' in the 14 days, they can charge you a daily rate for this which will be more than the annual premium divided by 365 days... they can also charge you a 'reasonable' admin fee... hope this helps.

Re: Performance Direct Insurance rip off

You can also charge them for your time. You know banks charge an admin fee for sending you a letter regarding your overdraft, well you can turn it on them if you can prove you are spending time chasing.

I recently got 20 from Npower, 30 from Barclays.

Turn the rules back on them. But Bumble is right. Contract law says 14 days cooling off period, however insurance can be different as you have used there service for a period of time. But you can go on mis-selling, changing the rules after agreement.

You should be ok. It just takes time as they hate to give money back.

Re: Performance Direct Insurance rip off

Check the weasel wording as some insurers charge a fee for a minimum period once they put you on cover..in some cases 3 months minimum cover..Its a huge scam and often the basic consumer protection laws don't apply..insurance has its own rules.

Re: Performance Direct Insurance rip off

What a shower, Quoted cheapest Insurance then after I'd paid required my DVLA Check Code Number ?
I'm 66 and have NEVER been asked for this before.
So I cancelled, 20 minutes later...OH NO, they charged me 55 for the privilege!
I am now reporting them to The Insurance Ombudsman re the 14 day cooling off period.
What a bunch of xzwx this lot are.
DO NOT USE.
Further, try phoning them, set aside 15 minutes waiting for them to pick up.
