Styling Moddified B

Speaking with experience a 200Hp B is errm, quick. Power to weight is about 200hp per ton. There are no real issues with it except wheelspin. It could do with traction control and bigger wheels but the whole idea is 'sleeper car' to look entirely standard. Its a bit ragged around the edges at present and needs boost gauge / oil pressure gauges. Engine is 'proper job' factory recon so no worries there. The main issue is brake fade..standard brakes aren't up to a crash stop from 140mph.

Hiya,

Just relised, are you running a turbo conversion in yr B,
more info and pic's please.

Re the brakes, the old coupe brembo's bolt straight on. That should stop her.

B is sitting in a hanger on our airfield right now. Not finished and not road legal. I'm having a ball in Ireland finding an insurance company to take it on, I should have checked first.

When its done and roadworthy and tidy etc then I'll post up some pics.

You've used the coupe motor then, are you still using the B's gearbox, believe there is a Lsd or anti slip kind of gear used in the early coupes, that would help with the extra power. The brembo's are a must, How easy or difficult was the modification.

Its a straight replacement of the existing B block 1747cc with the 1995cc coupe 4 pot turbo using the existing B running gear, clutch and gearbox. It would have probably been easier to have a donor coupe on hand to lift the spares, brakes etc. But we couldn't get one in any better condition than completely shagged...and I wanted to use decent quality parts. I know it needs better brakes and I reckon the clutch won't last long. The engine boys think the gearbox should be ok as they tuned up a Punto HGT to 180hp without problem.

Local engine builder did the work as a project for their apprentice engine fitters. It needs a lot of tidying up. Forget the power on tap and drop in the clutch and it does a spectacular wheelspin and goes nowhere. Unless we can sort the wheelslip then any Joe in a Corsa / Saxo will beat it off the lights. Once it gets rolling though YEAH!!

And then there is the noise..a sort of manic whistling scream as the needle reaches the far right of the speedo. The first and last time I did it I ran out of runway and there's a river on the far side.

So let me get this straight, Youve kept the original barchetta head, but used the 2ltr coupe block and turbo. Are you using the orriginal ECU and how about fueling, I take it u have upped the fuel pressure, pump and injectors.

 Looking at this thread... I am soooo going to visit the scrappers here to see if I can find a 2.0L turbo lump....:D Had seen a couple on the roads.. a few years ago.. hopefully one got smashed up.. preferably not too badly... It's engine would be going to a good cause....:D

I remember reading on a lotus website that upto about 200HP was about the maximum recomended on a front wheel drive car but over this had a problem with torque steer, wheelspinning, etc... 286HP May be a wee bit more than i'm looking for but I'd sure give it a go..... would need to look into a serious brake upgrade to go with it !!!

Kirry you sure about the Brembo breaks? will they bolt straight on? plates as well as calipers? Front and back? ABS? etc etc.. a lot of questions I know but I have something going on here and if it works out the B will have new shoes... :D:D

Sorry didn't make it clear. Its a complete 1995cc 16v Coupe unit with new injectors and re-mapped 16v ECU. I didn't do the work so I don't know exactly how they did it..They did tell me though that the Coupe Brembo's don't fit: Coupe has 16" wheels and the B 15"..this true?

Very expensive exercise and I sort of regret doing it 'cos I don't ever see it being finished and road legal..spoiled a nice car perhaps?

There are two types of Brembos, discs on the coupes, I believe the early ones shared the same bolt patern.as the B,s, Puntos etc.

You would need to source the discs and calipers and use 16" 0r 17" rims but in effect bolt a direct replacement, ABS works fine.

There is a Punto HGT here with this brake set up.

Will have another search but believe the 16vt coupes brakes, disc's and calipers are the ones that fit.

If someone can confirm that next mod for me could be brake upgrade..

If I remember correctly those coupe discs are ~3cm biger?

Yes there is a separate thread about it. I think the design is poorly executed. I'm not knocking the quality of the work carried out, rather the styling and ideas behind it.

about quality that extended arches... i have (had) a picture of how they do that... i'm not expert, but job looks professionally done. will search for pic...

I think the arches are too big for the B, if they were at least half the size it may have looked ok and been a good improovement. I,m supprised that someone would go to all this trouble and money to modify the bodywork and leave the engine bay as standard though.

+1 ;)

Wonder how many are still available?
