Technical Whiney noise. Any ideas?

Car was back early as the coolant repair was done by cleaning thermostat housing outlet and hose (mostly corrosion), no new parts needed - hence came back early. Wheel bearing changed - the noise is still present and worse than ever (I think faulty wheel bearing was masking the problem somewhat). Gearbox specialist booked for Monday for replacement of bottom pinion bearing and top bearing (chance of successful repair is 90%) - I'll chance it as the reconditioned gearbox is 3 times as much  (and about 1/4 of the car's worth). Driving husband's Volvo tank (XC90) - hating every minute of it....

Will keep you posted of course...

I'm really interested to find out whether or not you manage to find a solution to this! My 1.9 M-Jet has had the same whining sound for a few months now and it's so annoying! Oddly enough, I never noticed the whining noise until AFTER having my gearbox bearings replaced! Perhaps the noise was just being masked by the bearing noise... It's not got any better or any worse, so just learning to live with it.

So far (alongside regular services) it's had a new turbo, gearbox bearings, EGR valve, top strut mounts, drop links, tyres... and I've had abarth front, back and skirts and a stainless cat back system fitted. Could anything else go wrong? Not even had it a year yet!

Well... a coil spring has just snapped so both fronts will be changed, the glow plugs need changing and the injectors are going to be reconditioned.

Due to have the tappets checked/adjusted as well as cambelt changed too.

... but I still love it

I look forward to hearing your solution, if I manage to get mind sorted I will let you all know (y)

Tyres going wrong..!!,
thought that stopped in the 80's:rolleyes:

Right folks, car is back - and the noise is gone!!!(y) Warren (of WG Motorworks) changed the bottom pinion bearing and the top bearing (with the gearbox in situ - awesome :slayer:) and it now purrrs again! Done in 2.5 hours and for a third of the price of the reconditioned gearbox... Well chuffed :D

Great news, Mel - glad it all worked out for you in the end.

Are you planning to keep it for awhile longer now?

Yeah, plan to keep it until it falls apart (being Fiat, that might be tomorrow ;)) Nothing I saw on the market tempted me (well, maybe GT86 - IF it had room in the back and maybe Renault Twingo GT - but that is not out yet...) TBH, the constant whiney noise put me off driving it but now its fixed I love my car again! Happy days...
