Hi everyone, I've got a fiat 600D with a 903cc motor and gearbox from an 850 sport coupe. I'm planning to stick a more powerful motor (124 sport 1400 or swift gti 1300) with a VW gearbox in it. However I've been reading that the stub axle is a weak link. I'm pretty sure the car has 850 stub axles since its had the gearbox put in as well. The car will not be raced, but will be used to its full potential at the lights. Are the stub axles safe for this 'abuse'

I would be inclined to convert to CV joint ends, as I'd doubt that the rubber outboard joint would last very long. Check out Ditchdigger's thread on RetroRides, he has a pretty powerful beast by the look of it. He may be able to give some idea of his experiences. (Topic: 1971 Fiat 850 sedan : 843cc turbo)

Thanks for that link, it was quite an amazing read. He must have spent countless hours and dollars on that little gem of a car. The skill he possesses is enviable. I couldn't see anything about cv joints though. I think he has taken a break for a while. Reading the problems he has had with spun bearings, cams and another dozen gremlins, sure brought back to mind the Fix It Again Tony acronym for FIAT.

Yep, only mentioned Ditchdiggers thread as he had broken axles (see 20 may 2011). CV joints are mentioned in a few places, notably Al Cosentino's books. I think John Edwards @ Costa Mesa R&D is doing some work in this area. Can't recall anyone selling the bits, you may have to do some searching.
