We drove off the lot and within a block this code showed up on left side of the digital information area. In a red circle the number 20. Have spent about 2 hours trying to figure it out and nothing. We also smell something that seems to be burning. We want to drive it Sunday, but are afraid something is seriously wrong.
Thank you for any help you can provide.

Welcome to the forum.

That error does not seem to match anything in the handbook, at least on the UK version.

Normally on a 500L an error will be accompanied by a message on the display but I'm guessing as you haven't mentioned one this didn't happened either. I concur with Scout500 this is very much the dealers problem to sort including accepting any liability if they say the car is OK to drive.

Ideally if you have got a burning smell it should really be recovered BUT note the car is brand new (as I read it anyway) and some smells akin to burning can be quite normal as new parts including the cat and exhaust and other engine parts heat up when new. Normally this will disappear after a day or two, but speak to your dealer defo.

Please post back what they say as it may help somebody else.

In the UK and Europe a red circle with a number in it is a speed limit sign. Is there an optional speed limit warning on this car, settable by the driver and it is set at 20mph?

Hot smells may be normal on a new car, so the two may not be linked, but ask the dealer.

The 500L has a speed limiter rather than a warning.

So it doesn't warn you you have exceeded the pre set limit it actually prevents you exceeding it. You can temporarily override it by fully depressing the accelerator (gas for the op) but it then flashes the pre set speed - I wonder if this is what is occurring (though the OP doesn't mention anything flashing.

(At least this is what the UK spec ones have.)
