My Air Bag Light is on,my mechanic has scanned the car and it shows up as a internal fault in the airbag Ecu,he has recommended another airbag Ecu either a new one or a secondhand one with no crash history, has anyone had this problem and what was the outcome.

Thanks Debby

He's right. They do go faulty for no reason. They are easy to swap and once the codes are cleared and the new ecu is proxy aligned the issues should be sorted.

Thanks for the reply,do you know where I can get a secondhand one from? or would you suggest a new one from fiat.

Thank you

I have answered Debby's PM, but thought I would copy and paste my reply here too for future reference for anyone.

As far as I'm aware there are basically only two types of ECUs. A metal cased one and a Plastic cased one. I'm sure the fact is the same for the diesel. To be sure that is the problem you first need to plug the car into MultiECUScan first to make sure it's the ECU and not a fault with either one of the seatbelts, pretensioners or airbags. If you replace or repair the ECU and the fault remains the light will stay up. Where abouts are you in the world? If someone lives nearby I'm sure they will plug it in for you. If you're anywhere near me, I'll do it for you.

If you do need to change the ECU then you can either buy one on eBay or you can take yours out, send it off and for £30 they will reset it. There are ads on ebay right now for ECU repair and I have used them before.

sorry about hijacking this old thread.
I'm also in the position of having to replace my airbag ecu.

Would you know what the are the important numbers , my ecu is 51782985 D220 5wk43908
Is the model number D220? and the 51782985 the serial number?
Can I replace with any D220?

any info would be appreciated

Thanks

Derek

Just thinking about this again. Do you know whether this is a software or hardware error? I have used reset services before which have only removed the crash data and I’ve still had to reset the error codes myself once reinstalled, but the new person I have just used zeros the lot. I wonder whether for the sake of £30 it might be worth a punt?

typecastboy, the error message suggests a PSU issue in the controller, i'll do a bit more poking around to see if there is anything else in ther.

typecastboy, I agree, I'll put the old one back in to see if comes up with the same errors. I'll have to check the connections again as well. Puzzling as there is an obvious airbag warning on the dash.
